Description
Castelnuovo dell'Abate is home to the stately 17th-century palazzo where Guiseppe Bianchini vinified the wines of Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona until a few years ago. Today the wines are produced and bottled in a brand new cellar just outside the village. Cyclist Paulo Bianchini traded his bike for his father's heritage and oversees the performance of the peloton of wines.
At the bottom of the ladder is a juicy Rosso IGP Toscana. A step higher are two DOC Sant'Antimos: 'Ateo' with cabernet sauvignon and merlot in the blend and 'Fabius', a pure syrah. The Rosso di Montalcino is the prelude to the big boys. Two Brunellos are made every year: the regular Brunello is a blend from different vineyards and the Brunello Pianrosso is a cru so comes from only one (the best) vineyard.
The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso is distinguished by a unique aromatic profile that brings out mineral notes of crushed limestone or chalk. This adds a greater sense of focus and delineation that is not only noticeable in the bouquet but also applies to the way the wine hits the palate in a fuller and more determined way (compared to the slightly softer classic Brunello). This wine still needs some time, so decant in its younger years. The Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso comes from a single vineyard. The wine has received 94/100 points from James Suckling and 94/100 points from Parker.
ABOUT 2017
2017 was a hot and dry harvest year. Fortunately, the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona estate is in a fairly cool location with south-facing vines and well-drained soils at the back of Castelbuovo dell'Abate. This special place is the reason that all the wines of Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona always have very high scores. Also highly recommended to taste the wine of this house vertically. The lifespan is always very long in all cases, so it is nice to taste a number of vintages next to each other (vertical) and to taste the climatic differences in the wine. This estate is also certified for organic farming.
Fact: Of course we buy directly, so safe, direct and conditioned transport from winery to our conditioned Wine Warehouse. Given the very high 2015 and 2016 scores, there is a lot of NEP in circulation. This wine is protected by a hologram on the capsule so you can check that you have an original Ciacci Brunello Pianrosso.

The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso shows nice balance and elegance, and it definitely shows the deft hand of the winemaking team in what was not an easy vintage by any stretch. This pretty wine delivers lots of fresh cherry and wild rose, with ferrous earthy, licorice and grilled herb; I also get bay leaf and rosemary sprig. Like the annata 2017 Brunello produced by this estate, the single-vineyard Brunello Pianrosso is distinguished by a sweet cherry note (plus a hefty 15% alcohol) that accompanies the wine from start to finish. Production is 37,000 bottles.
Paolo Bianchini and his family shared the same frustrations as other top producers in the appellation regarding the hot and dry 2017 vintage. Thankfully, the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona estate is located in a rather cool location with south-facing vines and well-draining galestro soils on the back side of Castelbuovo dell'Abate. I always like to think of this tiny hilltop hamlet as the place where the day's sunbeams shine in Montalcino before sunset. This estate is certified for organic farming.

Black cherry, blackberry and blueberry flavors mark this saturated red. Beefy tannins offer support and all the components are in the right place. Stays fresh and long on the finish, with lingering accents of fruit, mineral and tobacco. Best from 2023 through 2043. 3,083 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. — BS

Vinous
A nuanced, delicate bouquet of dried strawberries, roses, hints of sweet spice and crushed rocks lifts up from the charming 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso. This is remarkably lifted, yet juicy and energetic, as ripe red berries and minerals cascade across the palate. It leaves a coating of violet-tinged florals, along with persistent raspberry and cherry tones. The tannin management here is absolutely stunning, as the Pianrosso finishes structured yet vividly fresh.

In Castelnuovo dell'Abate is the stately 17th-century palazzo where Guiseppe Bianchini vinified the wines of Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona until a few years ago. Today the wines are produced and bottled in a brand new cellar just outside the village. Cyclist Paulo Bianchini traded his bike for his father's heritage and oversees the performance of the peloton of wines.
The estate has origins dating back to the 17th century and it still retains its historical heritage in a building called "Palazzo" (palace) which was built by Fabivs de' Vecchis, Bishop of Montalcino and Abbot of Sant'Antimo Abbey . After the death of the bishop, the palace and the surrounding estate were auctioned under the Italian law on church property and on September 16, 1868, they were bought by Countess Eva Bernini Cerretani. On December 31, 1877, Countess Cerretani sold the entire estate to the Ciacci family from Castelnuovo dell'Abate. After the marriage between Count Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona, a direct descendant of Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Pius II) and Elda Ciacci, the episcopal palace became the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona
In 1985, the Countess Elda Ciacci gave full ownership to Giuseppe Bianchini, farmer of the estate for many years, raising a brand new and leading philosophy production with only attention to the quality of the wines and also opening up exports worldwide. Giuseppe, who sadly passed away in February 2004, left the business to his son and daughter, Paolo and Lucia.
The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona estate is located on the south-eastern slope of the municipality of Montalcino, close to the medieval village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate and the famous Romanesque Abbey of Sant'Antimo, which dates back to the 11th century. The entire estate, which extends over 220 hectares, of which 55.5 hectares are vineyards and 40 olive groves, has all the typical features of the Tuscan countryside, decorated with rolling hills, meadows and forests of unforgettable colors. Located between the Arna Hill and the Orcia River in the southeast, it offers a unique panorama with the beautiful contours of Mount Amiata in the background. Wild animals, scents of flowers and plants and the typical farmhouses that are scattered around, create a peaceful and calm atmosphere in this area.
Vigna Ferraiole, Vigna Egle, Vigna Contessa and Vigna Colombaio are just some of the main vines of Sangiovese Grosso. South-facing vineyards and located in the heart of the Val d'Orcia Park, Unesco World Heritage known for top wines due to its marl and slate contents, dating back to the Eocene.
The Sangiovese Grosso clone is selected from the estate's oldest vines, characterized by wild bunches and large, thick-skinned berries. It is a particularly representative variety of Sangiovese from Montalcino and gives quality even in difficult vintages.
Both wines Brunello di Montalcino DOCG “Pianrosso” and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva “Vigna di Pianrosso” Santa Caterina d´Oro come from a careful selection of grapes from the only vineyard, the oldest and the most representative. "Pianrosso" covers 11.69 hectares (29.22 acres). The altitude of this large vineyard varies from 240 to 360 meters above sea level.
