Description
Vilafonté's Series C is the top model and only a very limited number of these are made, so the Netherlands will only receive a handful of cases. The 2021 Series C has an intense ruby red color and a vibrant crimson rim and starts impeccably balanced and generous on the nose which is wrapped in elegant baking spices coming from almost 70% new French oak.
The Series C is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 20% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Franc and thus a South African Bordeaux. The wine bursts with finesse, precision, elegance and juicy dark fruit. The Series C is full of flavour and has juicy blackberry essence, notes of black raspberries, brioche and cedar cigar box on the palate. Everything is completely in balance with fine-grained tannins, juicy acidity and a mineral tension in the mid-palate and ends with a long finish that evolves with persistence. The 2021 has been awarded the almost maximum score of 99/100 points by Parker.

Vilafonté - America meets South Africa
Vilafonté is a special project in Paarl. It is the first collaboration between an American and a South African company in the world of wine. And not only in that respect it is unique. It is also special because it is a collaboration between partners who are fully committed to top quality, with specialists from both countries who are fully focused on making 'quality wines'. Vilafonté started as a project that initially focused on the American market, but is now also successful in other important export markets.
Vilafonté’s pursuit of quality concerns the entire production process, from the soil to the bottle, with a luxurious and grand appearance as the first focus. The name, Vilafonté, is derived from the main soil type of the estate, which is 40 hectares in size, and which, due to its character, is the source of the wines of the winery. The composition of the team involved in Vilafonté, there is a unique mix of knowledge, skills, international vision, and at the same time international recognition. The goal of the Vilafonté project is nothing less than to become the first real luxury wine brand in South Africa.
The following partners are involved in the project: Zelma Long is the head of the winemaking team for the Vilafonté project. Zelma is one of the best-known winemakers in the United States, with a great international reputation. Michael Ratcliffe is the General Manager of Vilafonté. Mike is the Managing Director of his family estate, Warwick, which is considered one of the leading wineries in South Africa. Phil Feese is responsible for the strategic direction of the vineyard management and all matters relating to the development of the vineyards. Phil is in charge of the vineyard management and is the one who designed the Vilafonté vineyard, which he calls “Different by Design”.
Also at the heart of it all is partner Bartholomew Broadbent (yes, the son of), who is responsible for distributing Vilafonté in the US. Bartholomew is the owner of one of the most prestigious small importers in the US. Decanter Magazine recently listed him as one of the 50 most influential people in the world of wine. Vilafonté owns a total of 12 hectares, planted in 1998 and 1999. The estate measures 42 hectares in total. Vilafonté is entirely planted as a classic Bordeaux vineyard, with strictly selected clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot. The planting was carried out using the latest techniques in satellite mapping, mapping the winery with infrared photographs and multi-spectrum images to see which grapes should be planted where and to determine where more or less irrigation is needed. In this way, the best results are obtained from the planting through optimal care of the vineyard. The wines are a perfect reflection of this: South African with great class.

Flirting with triple digits, the 2021 Series C is constructed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Still incredibly tight yet exuding that special “it” factor, the red blend is layered with gorgeous dark red and succulent black fruit tones with gobs of attractive oak essences that sway with power and finesse. If you're a cult California Cabernet collector, you'll want to add this to your cellar as fast as possible. Just under 20,000 bottles rested for about two years in French oak barrels, 81% new. It's utterly profound.

The 2021 Series C comprises 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 10% Malbec and 7% Cabernet Franc, matured for 22 months in 81% new oak (much higher than the Series M) and the rest, 2nd and 3rd fill. The concentrated nose offers blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and light pencil box aromas. Maybe if you wanted to compare, more Pensacola than Médoc, which is no surprise given the blend. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins, very fresh and vibrant, with gentle grip building towards a fleshy finish considering the growing season. There’s a lovely, persistent black pepper-infused aftertaste. Superb.

"We are asking questions of ourselves in the post-Zelma era,” proprietor Mike Ratcliffe tells me when I visit the winery just outside Stellenbosch together with winemaker Arlene Mains. “We are questioning, again, about the possibility of a single wine, so we are testing experimental blends with Series M and Series C. It will take a number of years. We have to see if it would be a tangible level-up. The 2021 vintage is the first under Arlene Mains. The Cabernet Franc from Stellenbosch is a beautiful blending component. We have a new irrigation system using a 40cm pipe so that water is injected directly down into the earth. Our water usage has dropped 70%. When you switch it on, the vine reacts much quicker as the water goes directly to the roots.” It’s easy to see why they have established such loyal demand that their wines sell out on pre-allocation each year. It is stylistically consistent, veering more towards a fruit-driven, maybe more Californian inspired Bordeaux wine that is expected given Zelma Long’s prior involvement, plus Ratcliffe’s tireless own promotion overseas, which is crucial to establish brands. All three cuvées are worth seeking out, the Seriously Old Dirt representing excellent value for money.
