Description
The difference between the Reserva 2016 and the regular Hacienda Monasterio (the wine that used to be called Crianza) is that they select the grapes from the parts of the vineyard where there is more limestone in the soil. It is a blend of mainly Tempranillo with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and then aged for 20 months in French barriques of which 40% is new oak. The oak is perfectly integrated and the wine has an impressive nose with more red than black fruit, which indicates freshness. It is quite polished and has very elegant tannins. This is a great vintage for this bottling - the Cabernet Sauvignon is very integrated with the Tempranillo and complements it. It is powerful but has great balance and great finesse.

The 2019 Reserva was produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, a selection of plots, mostly from the zone of El Picón below the winery and the Cabernet from the gravel and sandy soils. The idea for the future is to vinify only one wine from the property and sell it with different élevage (like it was in the 90s!). 2019 was a very warm year with high ripeness, and the wine reflects it with 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.72 (and 5.3 grams of acidity). A rounder and more voluptuous year offset by the more calcareous soils, it's riper but has a serious and somewhat austere (call it mineral) palate. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021.
Carlos del RÃo junior is slowly taking the reins of Hacienda Monasterio, both from his father and from his father-in-law (Peter Sisseck!). They got rid of the Merlot (it works once every 10 years!) and replaced it with Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and are experimenting with foudres and oak vats. They have 98 hectares of vines—83% Tempranillo and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon—on 12 different soils, all certified organic since 2015. The idea here is to control the ripeness and alcohol in the wines as the grapes achieve ripeness earlier and earlier with climate change. Output averages 250,000 bottles per year.
