2016 Franz Haas Pinot Nero Alto Adige Pònkler

Franz Haas's 2016 Pinot Nero Pònkler comes from Alto Adige, a region in northern Italy known for its cool climate and ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. This wine combines finesse with elegance, offering a refined expression of the Pònkler vineyard's terroir.

About Franz Haas

Franz Haas is a family-run winery that has been producing high-quality wines in Alto Adige for generations. Their focus is on meticulous vineyard care and a vinification process that emphasizes the pure expression of the grapes. The result is wines that are both fresh and complex, with a clear regional signature.

The 2016 vintage

The 2016 Franz Haas Pinot Nero Pònkler from Alto Adige is among Italy's most refined Pinot Noirs. Sourced from a high-altitude vineyard on volcanic porphyry soil, this wine displays an unparalleled combination of power and elegance. Taste refined red and black fruit, spice, subtle oak notes, and velvety tannins. James Suckling awarded this Pinot Nero 95 points, highlighting its balance and finesse, as well as its subtle oak notes and beautifully integrated tannins.

Grapes and vinification

The Pònkler is made entirely from Pinot Noir. After careful hand-harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, where the fine tannins are harmoniously integrated. The result is an elegant, cool style of Pinot Noir with a fine structure and refined complexity.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the 2016 Pinot Nero displays a bright ruby red color. The aroma opens with freshness and subtle spice, complemented by hints of licorice and tobacco leaf. On the palate, the wine is delicate and balanced, with beautifully integrated tannins and a light touch of oak that complements the elegant finish. The style is refined, cool, and expressive without being heavy or overpowering.

Storage potential and serving tips

After nearly ten years of bottle aging, the wine is at a wonderful point of development: complex, fresh, and balanced, with years of potential still to come. Critics praise this vintage as one of the finest, perfectly drinkable now but also suitable for further aging. And because wine is a natural product, it's always enjoyable and exciting to experience how a bottle develops over time. An iconic Pinot Nero that proves just how great Alto Adige can be. Serve the wine slightly chilled, between 14-16°C, and decant, if desired, half an hour before serving to allow the aromas to fully develop.

Wine and food pairings

  • Poultry: roasted chicken or duck with light spices.
  • Red meat: lamb or veal with a subtle sauce.
  • Dishes with mushrooms: risotto, pasta or fried mushrooms.
  • Soft cheeses: young cheeses such as Brie or Taleggio.

Founded in 1880, the Franz Haas winery is located in the beautiful Alto-Adige area on the border of Austria and Italy. Since then, the company has been working on the road for seven generations. The winery was always passed down to sons of the same name, Franz. In the 1980s, most of the vineyards were renovated, creating space for new varieties that better suit the type of "terroir" of the region. The grapes come from 55 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards start at an altitude of 220 meters, rising to 1,150 meters. There is a wide variety of microclimates and soils, from clay to limestone. The vineyards are among the highest vineyards in Alto Adige.

The choice of planting vines at these altitudes has proven that optimal and aromatic wines can be produced with a nice acidity. Large temperature differences between day and night and an enormous attention to the vineyards have also helped. Franz Haas is recognized as a leading expert on the most sensitive grape variety of all: the Pinot Nero. Despite all the attention, dedication and hard work, this beautiful grape is stubborn and has its own character, just like Franz himself. The labels of the bottles are also characteristic. These are by Riccardo Schweizer, who has collaborated extensively with artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Cocteau, Paul Éluard and Le Corbusier during his career.
