Description
The 2016 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple, comes out of the glass with blueberry compote and plum pudding in the nose plus hints of spice cake, non-smoked cigars, menthol, licorice and dusty soil and accentuated by black tea. The taste is full, but incredibly balanced and lively with an amazing freshness and very fine, very firm tannins. It possesses the most provocative earthly sparks, giving the very long, nicely perfumed aftertaste depth. Stupefying. If you wish to drink it in the short term, we recommend decanting it so that the wine can show its true character. This wine can be imposed for a minimum of 30+ years and is one of the very rare wines that has received the maximum score from both Parker and James Suckling.

Mid-October 2018 New Releases, The Wine Advocate
The 2016 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple, it comes strutting out of the glass with flamboyant Black Forest cake, blueberry compote and plum pudding notions plus hints of spice cake, unsmoked cigars, menthol, licorice and dusty soil and accented by wafts of tar and black tea. The palate is full-bodied yet incredibly poised and vibrant with amazing freshness and very fine-grained, very firm tannins. It possesses the most provocative earthy sparks, providing arresting depth to the very long, beautifully perfumed finish. Stunning.
“2016 is like 2013 with more character,” Colgin’s winemaker Allison Tauziet told me. “It offers the harmony of 2013, but it has just a little more to say. In fact, it has some post-drought qualities—creating more flavor, more color and more stuffing. And it seems to have the texture of a riper vintage. I love the aromatics of a cooler season like this. It was the weather at the end of the season that drove everything home. The harvest was well-paced, although the flavors peaked simultaneously, so you couldn’t take it for granted.”
Tauziet and the team at Colgin were 100% on their game in 2016, as were the “grand cru” vineyard sites they bottle: Tychson Hill (in St. Helena), Cariad (a blend of David Abreu vineyards) and IX Estate (on Pritchard Hill). When the planets align so perfectly for the Cabernets in a vintage and the wines are this jaw-dropping, how else can you rate the results?

Aromas of blackberries, black truffles, burnt orange peel, forest floor and blueberries. Decadent. Full to medium body. The tannins are so tight and dense with super fine and caressing texture. An amazing, mesmerizing wine. Drinkable and glorious, but better after 2022.

From: Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)
The 2016 IX Estate is a total knock-out. A wine of exceptional balance and harmony, the 2016 is stunning from the very first taste. Nothing really stands out. Instead, it is the wine's sense of proportion that makes the most lasting impression. Seamless, layered and voluptuous to the core, the 2016 has so much to offer. Bright Pritchard Hill acids and minerality are felt on the persistent, beautifully sculpted finish.

Colgin's 2016s are off the charts. I can’t say I am entirely surprised, as the wines were clearly brilliant when I started tasting them in Spring 2017. Winemaker Allison Tauziet told me she is leaving a little more leaf cover these days to gain a bit more freshness and energy in the wines. That is exactly what comes through in tasting. The 2016s are wonderfully deep and full of vitality. More importantly, they are outragerously delicious, even at this very early stage.
