Description
The 2016 Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a prestigious red wine from Burgundy, produced by Maison Camille Giroud. This wine comes from the Charmes-Chambertin vineyard, located in the Côte de Nuits, an area known for its exceptional Pinot Noir wines. The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard is located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin and is known for its chalky clay soils. These soils, combined with a favorable south-easterly exposure, contribute to the complexity and finesse of the wine.
The Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a rich purple colour and a complex aroma of ripe black fruits, such as blackberries and black cherries, complemented by subtle floral notes and a hint of spice. On the palate, the wine offers a full body with silky tannins, a lively acidity and a long, elegant finish. The balance between fruit, acidity and tannins makes this wine particularly refined.
The 2016 Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has excellent ageing potential. Although the wine is already approachable, it will develop further with a few years of bottle ageing and will gain even more complexity and depth. This wine is an excellent accompaniment to refined dishes such as roast lamb, duck with a fruity sauce or game dishes. Hard cheeses such as Comté also go well with this wine.
About Maison Camille Giroud
Founded in 1865 and located in Beaune, Maison Camille Giroud is a renowned winery in Burgundy. The house is known for its production of traditional wines with great ageing potential. In the 1990s, Camille Giroud began purchasing grapes and acquired several vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, with appellations ranging from village to Grand Cru. The winery strives to accurately reflect the diversity of Burgundy's terroirs, focusing on both the style of the vintage and the unique characteristics of each terroir. Today, Camille Giroud produces around 30 different appellations per vintage, of which 80% are red and 20% are white wines.
With a limited production of around 50,000 bottles per year, the house continues to focus on quality and authenticity. In recent years, the winery has gained new momentum with the appointment of winemaker Carel Voorhuis, who uses his passion for Burgundy and his expertise to further shape Camille Giroud's ambitions.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined, mineral-driven bouquet that expands wonderfully in the glass, a very typical Charmes for the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, lithe tannin interlaced with pretty dark cherry and citrus fruit. The finish is wonderfully poised with great length. This is one of David Croix's best 2013s.

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an attractive, perfumed bouquet with red cherries, cranberry and crushed stone aromas, nicely defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, refreshing and mineral-driven for a Charmes-Chambertin with a precise and piquant finish. This is a well crafted wine that should give 20+ years of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

A dark, inviting Burgundy, the 2016 Charmes-Chambertin is all sensuality. Dark red fruit, blood orange, spice and floral notes build as this silky, plush wine shows off its voluptuous personality. Already quite open, the Charmes gives the impression it will drink well with minimal cellaring, although naturally the 2016 is going to need time in bottle to show the full spectrum of aromatic nuances that only develop in bottle. Even so, the Charmes is likely to remain the most approachable for Camille Giroud's 2016s Grand Crus.
- By Stephen Tanzer on December 2017
The 2016 is a vintage of transition at Camille Giroud. Outgoing winemaker David Croix vinified the wines with his successor, Carel Voorhuis, who saw the wines into bottle. There are plenty of highlights in this range, at all levels. The finest 2016s offer notable aromatic presence and freshness in a mid-weight, transparent style that is hugely appealing. - Antonio Galloni
