Tornatore Etna Rosso 2021

Tornatore Etna Rosso 2021 is a bright, light red wine with aromas of red berries, amarene and black cherries. The taste is elegant and harmonious, with firm tannins that are beautifully balanced with the rich fruit notes. The wine gives a ripe, sultry impression and offers a refined drinking experience.

The Tornatore wine estate

The Tornatore wine estate was founded by Francesco Tornatore, who was originally active in telecommunications. In the 21st century he founded an impressive wine estate in Castiglione di Sicilia, located on the north side of Etna, on volcanic soil. However, the family history goes back to 1865, when Francesco's great-grandfather was already planting vineyards. This rich history of more than 150 years is combined with modern wine growing techniques.

High altitude vineyards and native grapes

The Tornatore vineyards are located at an altitude of between 600 and 1000 meters, which ensures a remarkable freshness and elegance in the wines. This location gives the red wines a Burgundy-like finesse, despite Sicily's warm climate. The domain works exclusively with indigenous grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for red wines and Carricante for white wines. All grapes are picked by hand, which contributes to the high quality of the wine.

Vinification and maturation

In the wine cellar, much attention is paid to preserving the terroir. The wines are fermented in modern concrete vats and mature in large foeders, so little wood use can be tasted in the wine. This results in very precise, elegant, fresh and drinkable wines that are also affordable by Etna standards. The Tornatore Etna Rosso has quickly gained recognition, for example with three glasses from Gambero Rosso and up to 95 points from James Suckling.

Making wine under the Volcano is not easy, yet for those who succeed, it is the most rewarding thing there is. The Tornatore winery stands on the fertile northern slope of Mount Etna, whose lands, caressed by significant temperature ranges due to the proximity of the Nebrodi Mountains, are home to vines that sink into a unique terroir, shaped by the activity of Europe’s highest volcano. The magical combination of terroir, climate and production wisdom makes Etna’s northern slope an ideal area for the production of unique wines of exceptional complexity and sensory richness.
