Masseto 2015: icon from Bolgheri
Masseto is undoubtedly one of the most coveted Italian wines, a pure Merlot from a small vineyard in Bolgheri, Tuscany. Since its first vintage in the 1980s, Masseto has been considered Italy's answer to the great Bordeaux Pomerols. The vineyard, just seven hectares in size and divided into three plots, is situated on clay-rich soils that provide strength, structure, and complexity. The microclimate, with Mediterranean warmth and cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, produces grapes with both ripeness and finesse.
The vineyard and the estate
Masseto's vines are now 30 to 40 years old. They are meticulously maintained, and each plot is harvested and vinified separately. The new Masseto winery, completed around 2019, is entirely focused on this single label, although future expansion of the portfolio is being considered. The 2015 vintage thus arrived during a period of growth and innovation, but also confirmed Masseto's unique status as a cult wine.
Grape, harvest and vinification
The 2015 is a single-varietal 100% Merlot. The growing season enjoyed warm, sunny conditions, resulting in optimal ripening and a perfect balance between concentration and freshness. Each plot was fermented and aged separately, allowing the nuances of the different terroirs to be preserved. After fermentation, the wine was aged for approximately two years in new French oak barriques, after which the final blend was made.
Tasting notes: colour, aroma and flavour
Colour: Deep opaque ruby with a purple glow.
Nose: Lush aromas of ripe plums, cherries, and blackcurrants intertwined with violets, cedar, graphite, and subtle Mediterranean herbs. A layered bouquet that continually reveals new facets.
Palate: Powerful yet polished, with solid yet silky tannins. The mouthfeel is rich and full of tension, with black fruit, mineral notes, and exceptional length. The wine feels complete and precise, with all its components perfectly harmonizing.
Evaluation and drinking window
The 2015 Masseto received a perfect 100 points . Critics praised the wine as "teeming with sensorial spirit" and as a vintage that combines the qualities of previous great vintages such as 2004, 2007, and 2010. The drinking window runs from 2020 to 2050 , making this vintage one of Masseto's most enduring and impressive.
Sommelier advice and gastronomy
Serve at 16–18°C in large glasses to fully develop its aromatic complexity. Decanting for at least an hour is recommended. Gastronomically, Masseto 2015 pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as tournedos rossini, rack of lamb with rosemary, braised veal cheek, or truffle risotto. For cheese lovers, aged Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano are suitable choices.
For the investor
Masseto is one of the most sought-after Italian wines on the international market. The 2015, with its perfect score and exceptional longevity, is considered a benchmark vintage and an exceptionally valuable investment. Limited production, iconic status, and proven performance on the secondary market enhance its appeal to investors and collectors worldwide.

The aromas are profound here with a deep and vast character of black olives, cedar, chocolate and berries, as well as vanilla essence and light coffee. Flamboyant. Full-bodied, this powerful young Masseto is chewy, muscular and rich. Dusty tannins, yet wonderfully polished. A wine for the cellar. Try in 2022.
