Description
The Finca Valdepoleo is a wine that comes from 1 vineyard. Owner Carlos San Pedro believes this is the vineyard with the most potential: it was planted in 1973 with Tempranillo at an altitude of 630 meters. The Valdepoleo is fermented in small stainless steel barrels, after which the wine is raised in French oak barrels for 14 months. In the nose we smell ripe notes of black cherries, dark plums and black spices. The medium-bodied taste is beautifully spicy, with a clean balanced acidity. The Pujanza Finca Valdepoleo is a beautiful, modern Rioja. The wine has received 92 Parker points and 95 Penin points. Drink 2018-2026.
Carlos San Pedro is the owner of Bodegas Pujanza, who uses an almost manic approach to produce wines of the highest level. Carlos' original idea was to produce a single single vineyard from Laguardia - the capital of the Rioja - with Pujanza. But gradually it became clear that the terroirs of the vineyards are unique and different so that he changed his mind and decided to blend the uniqueness of the terroirs in some of his wines. The Valdepoleo is the first wine that is completely single vineyard and it is expected that more wines will follow in the future. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he consciously chooses to keep the amount of new wood low but also to raise the wines for longer in large (used) barriques. Bodegas Pujanza has approximately 30 hectares of vineyards, all of which are close to beautiful Bodega. The vineyards are all between 600 (Cisma) and 720 meters (Norte) height.

The vineyard-designated 2015 Finca Valdepoleo is pure Tempranillo from vines planted in 1973 on limestone and clay soils at 630 meters altitude in the village of Laguardia. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels for 14 months. It shows the style of the vintage—approachable, juicy, medium to full-bodied, clean, modern and with good ripeness and nicely integrated oak. The palate shows good balance and a powerful wine with long life ahead. There is less structure than in 2014, gentler, more approachable, with a rare combination of power and elegance. It's also balsamic and faintly Mediterranean, nicely balanced. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2017.
There is a new white from Pujanza, Anteportalatina, which is the same wine as the Añadas Frías, from the same vineyard that names it but from riper vintages. Most reds were from 2015, a warm and ripe vintage (all wines are 15% alcohol) when they did soft extractions to avoid heavy wines. It's a short and very healthy crop. The wines are gentle, perfumed, balanced and powerful.
As for 2017, their vineyards didn't suffer any frost, so yields were high and they got a very healthy crop, very unusual for the region.

The enveloping mulberry and spice aromas on the nose are only the first of the wonders of this stunning red Rioja, which has a great tannin structure that gives the medium-full-bodied palate both stature and excitement. Very long, fresh herbal finish of considerable complexity. Drink or hold.

Bodegas Pujanza is located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. The winery is located in one of the most beautiful villas in this region. A real prime location in the most beautiful part of the Rioja. Bodegas Pujanza is one of the youngest (top) Rioja houses and started in June 2002. It is a family business with a long tradition of growing grapes and wine making in the capital of the Rioja Alavesa. The location in the valley of the Ebro and the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, partly determines the character of the Pujanza wines.
Owner Carlos San Pedro and his team are constantly working to improve the performance of their vineyards and with an almost manic approach, they try to improve the quality of the wines even further. Pujanza is one of the new style winemakers in the Rioja such as Remirez de Ganuza and Tentenublo where the focus is on absolute top quality with emphasis on the fruit. The fact that Penin and Parker without exception rate the wines of this house well above 90 points (so the absolute honor division) says enough. The 4 main wines are the Hado, the Valdepoleo (in the past this wine was called the Pujanza Pujanza) the Norte and the cult wine the Cisma.
Carlos is one of the pioneers together with Remirez de Ganuza in the field of modern style Rioja's and has the luxury that his vineyards are situated high so that there are good differences between day and night temperature. This gives the wines extra complexity and freshness. Carlos only works with single vineyards except at the Hado (here the grapes are used from the norte and Valdepoleo vineyards). Carlos has divided all 3 vineyards into plots (except the Cisma vineyard because it is so small) and all these plots are vinified separately. Only just before bottling, the various plots are combined until it has the desired taste and then it is bottled. This concept is far from economical but does make for great wines. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he deliberately chooses to keep the amount of new wood low, but also to raise the wines longer in large (used) barriques.
Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of this renowned winery and supplies both consumers and Horeca and Retail.
