Description
Only made in peak years. No wood aging but long storage 'sur lies' at a low temperature on stainless steel ensures this unique product from northwest Spain. Only comes onto the market after a minimum of 8-10 years. This 2014 was only bottled in April 2023 and was then bottle matured for a number of months and the 2014 is seen as the vintage with the best storage potential.
Voted the very best white wine in Spain. Bodegas Senorans is located in Vilanovina, in the valley of the Rio Salnes, east of Pontevedra. The domain was purchased in 1979 by Marisol Bueno (president of the Rias Consejo) and her husband Javier Mareque. A lot of money was invested in replanting the vineyards. Everything was cleared and replanted with Albarino grapes, which give such stunning results here. In 1989, they invested heavily again to completely renew the production resources and thus had access to the latest and most modern means of producing wine. The first harvest was in 1990. In 1992, the young and promising oenologist Ana Quintela was brought into the company and since then the wines have shown an annual upward trend in terms of quality. Pazo de Senorans is always the last to start the harvest. They harvest with a higher sugar content than the other Bodegas. This results in optimally and evenly ripe grapes with ultimately more aromas and flavors and less aggressive acids. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand (which is the only possible way because the vines are planted in pergola form). and then the grapes are also selected by hand. We work with lower returns than elsewhere to achieve more concentration. This is also the only way to age the wines, because although in Spain people only want to drink the Albariño young, this Pazo de Señorans has a very good aging potential.
Marisol Bueno, owner of Pazo de Señorans, is considered one of the most dynamic winegrowers of the Rias Baixas and is the architect of one of the best white wines from Spain. The Selección de Añada is only made in peak years. No wood aging but a long storage of no less than 34 months at a low temperature on stainless steel ensures this unique product from northwest Spain. Only comes to market after ~8 years. This wine is made from the oldest vines with very low yields. The grapes are only picked when they have reached their ideal ripeness. The grapes then ripen further on stainless steel at a low temperature and on its yeast cells (sur lies) for ~3 years. The aromatic components of the wine can fully develop in this way. The Pazo Senorans Selección de Añada can be imposed for 10 years without any problem and will then improve even further.
This must be the most beautiful thing that can be produced in Rias Baixas. A well-known wine fanatic described this wine as a hybrid between Riesling and Sancerre. A symbiosis of the positive elements of the two wines. Opulent fragrances that unfold in complexity and finesse. Flowers, citrus, hints of petroleum, exotic accents and, above all, depth. Juicy and grapy at first contact, broad in taste, density with a finish to die for.

I think the 2014 Albariño Selección de Añada could be the finest vintage of this characterful long-aging Albariño, from a year with a more moderate 13% alcohol and very high acidity (and low pH) that make the wine fresher and more vibrant. It is developing very slowly and showing quite young after it spent over 30 months with lees in 1,500- and 3,000-liter stainless steel tanks. It has a pale color and an elegant nose with notes of freshly cut grass, white flowers and wet granite. The palate is vibrant with effervescent acidity, and it has a long, dry and tasty finish with an austere sensation, far away from the tropical notes of some past vintages. This is superb and should continue developing nicely in bottle. Bravo! It wasn't bottled until April 2023, and 14,000 bottles were produced.
Pazo de Señorans keeps working toward more sustainability in their vineyards, not a small task, as they control 43.33 hectares, 21.5 are their property and the rest from 66 families. Production fluctuates between 250,000 and 295,000 bottles.

Pazo de Señorans is located in the wine region of Rias Baixas which is located in Galicia, all the northwest of Spain and north of Portugal. This area is famous for producing Spain's best white wines, Rias Baixas' Albariño. Like many regions in Galicia, the soil here is also completely made of granite. The top layer consists of sand, mainly crumbled granite particles. This ensures that there is perfect water drainage from the soils. At low yields, the granite soils also ensure a nice minerality in the grapes.
The first harvest was in 1990. In 1992, the young and promising oenologist Ana Quintela was brought into the company and since then the wines have seen an annual increase in quality. Pazo de Señorans is always the last to start the harvest. They harvest with a higher sugar content than the other Bodegas. All this results in optimally and evenly ripe grapes with ultimately more aromas and flavors and less aggressive acids. Harvest is done only by hand, which is a result of the Pergola plantation and then the grapes are also selected by hand.
It is not without reason that Ferran Adrià (formerly El Bulli) has chosen this wine as one of his 'open wines', the Pazo Senorans, for his new restaurant 'Tickets' in Barcelona.
