Opus One 2014: origins, vision and style
Opus One is a joint project of Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Château Mouton Rothschild) and Robert Mondavi. The estate is located in Oakville (Napa Valley), where warm, dry summers are tempered by cool morning mists from San Pablo Bay. The diverse soils and western Oakville terroir yield ripe, exciting Cabernet, which is blended into Opus One into a single wine per vintage with a recognizable signature of power, refinement, and length.
Grape varieties and vineyards of Opus One 2014
The 2014 is a classic Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon as the backbone, complemented by Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and a small amount of Malbec. Opus One works with four carefully managed parcels in west Oakville, including areas within the renowned To Kalon region and parcels surrounding the winery. The combination of exposure, drainage, and careful canopy management produces concentrated, perfectly ripe berries with aromatic precision.
2014 Harvest in Oakville and Vinification
2014 saw an early cycle, with the earliest bud break ever for the estate. The growing season was mild and dry; harvest began on September 5th and concluded on October 7th. After rigorous selection, a lengthy maceration of approximately twenty days followed to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. Maturation took place for eighteen months in new French oak, followed by additional bottle rest for integration and complexity. The blend was finalized only after extensive tastings, based on texture, balance, and length.
Tasting notes: colour, aroma and flavour
Colour: deep ruby with purple hues.
Aroma: Layers of black cherry, cassis, and blackberry, framed by floral notes, fresh herbs, bay leaf, and subtle forest floor. Delicate hints of cocoa and spice suggest perfectly integrated wood.
Palate: Silky onset, followed by compact dark fruit with an energetic acidity and very fine-grained tannins. The core is precise and linear, with length that finishes with delicate mocha notes and a salty-mineral note. A wine with focus and refinement that rewards air and time.
Reviews and drinking window
Leading reviewers praised 2014 highly: James Suckling praised tension and finesse; Vinous praised the classic profile and extended aging potential; Decanter emphasized the serious, savory character. Wine Advocate highlighted energy, balance, and layering. In the cellar, the wine develops beautifully towards tertiary complexity; decanting (1–2 hours) enhances nuance and aromatic layering. Indicative drinking window: now through the mid-2030s, depending on storage.
Gastronomy and sommelier advice
Serve around 16–18°C in large Burgundy or Cabernet glasses. Excellent with roast beef (entrecote, côte de boeuf), saddle of lamb with rosemary, truffle risotto, or mushrooms and aged hard cheeses. For serving by the glass, aerate generously, use Coravin for precise pours, and note that after aeration, the wine reveals a seamless texture without losing volume.
Perspective for the investor
Opus One is among the most sought-after Napa Valley icon wines, boasting an international distribution network and a proven secondary market. The 2014 combines accessibility with storage reserves; scarcity and brand reputation support its long-lasting value. Professional storage and original packaging (OWC) remain key to optimal marketability.
Shipping Hidden Cellar wine

Mesmerizing aromas of flowers, bark, currants and blackberries. So perfumed. You just want to smell it. Exquisite tension and finesse with an almost Burgundian texture, yet it’s Napa in its soul with ripe fruit, stones, spices and Chinese tea leaf flavors. Savory and delicious. Drinkable but better in 2020. Available on October 2017.

From: 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: A Dark Horse Emerges (Jan 2025)
The 2014 Opus One has arrived at its tenth birthday in style. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, blood orange, mint and white pepper give the 2014 a striking top register of aromatics to play off its mid-weight structure. The 2014 remains quite youthful and vibrant. Its construction and overall feel are decidedly on the more linear, mid-weight side of things, in keeping with the style of the year.

From: Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)
The 2014 Opus One is not as showy or obvious as some of the other surrounding vintages, but it will have its day. Stylistically, the 2014 is bright and also a touch linear, with a construction built more on focus rather than opulence. Readers should plan on giving the 2014 another few years in bottle at a minimum. The mid-weight style is a bit Old World-leaning in this striking, super-classic Opus One.
- By Antonio Galloni on September 2018
Opus One has been on a run of late, as the most recent vintages have all been stellar. Michael Silacci, the estate's Director of Viticulture and Enology showed me a handful of wines to help put the 2016 in context. It's hard go wrong with any of these four wines. More than anything else, though, what is truly impressive about Opus One is the quality of these wines considering that production is 24-25,000 cases, the equivalent of a First Growth and many times the production of Napa Valley's elite wines.
