Description
The Story of Favia Erickson Winegrowers
Favia Erickson Winegrowers is the collaborative project of winemaker Andy Erickson and viticulturist Annie Favia. Both are among the most respected names in Napa Valley and are known for wines that display tension, freshness, and depth. Cerro Sur, one of their flagship creations, comes from high-elevation vineyards where coolness, altitude, and stony soils combine to produce wines of aromatic intensity and exceptional balance.
The vineyards are nestled in the hills of Rancho Chimiles, a location perfectly suited for Cabernet Franc due to its orientation and temperature variations. The combination of careful vineyard management and meticulous vinification produces wines that possess both structure and finesse. Cerro Sur 2014 is a striking example.
Origin of the grapes and characteristics of the blend
The 2014 Cerro Sur vintage is composed of 83 percent Cabernet Franc and 17 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The high proportion of Cabernet Franc gives the wine a unique aromatic profile, with floral nuances, spice, and a striking freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, firmness, and depth. The result is a wine that can be both light and intense, a combination characteristic of this vintage.
The grapes come from high-altitude plots in a cooler part of the region. This allows them to ripen slowly, while maintaining tension and aromatic precision. The winemakers emphasize that the 2014 stands out for its clarity, freshness, and aromatic lift.
The style of the 2014 vintage
The 2014 vintage is often cited in Napa as a vintage that stood out for its consistency and harmonious style. The grapes reached full ripeness without extreme weather conditions, resulting in wines with precise structure and fresh tension. For Cerro Sur, this meant the wine displayed a lively energy early on, yet still had sufficient power to age.
Favia's vinification is all about tranquility and precision. The grapes are carefully selected, processed by plot, and aged in oak barrels with the controlled use of new wood. This fully preserves the aromatic characteristics of Cabernet Franc.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2014 Cerro Sur
The color is bright and deep ruby red, with a vibrant sparkle that reflects the freshness of the vintage. On the nose, the wine displays immediate refinement. Floral notes of violets and dried flowers emerge, along with the red fruit and refreshing herbs typical of Cabernet Franc. A subtle earthy undertone and hints of forest floor add depth. Blueberry, black raspberry, and slightly spicy accents enhance the layered character. With a little air, notes of cocoa and a soft woody note are added.
On the palate, the wine is remarkably energetic and precise. The attack is fresh and bright, supported by red currant, raspberry, and a refined spiciness. The mid-palate reveals more structure and dark fruit notes, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing solid support. The 2014 feels light and airy, yet possesses sufficient density and power. The tannins are clearly present, yet retain a fine structure and complement the fresh acidity.
The finish is long, precise, and aromatic. The energetic style of the vintage is clearly evident. The whole remains vibrant, with a combination of red fruit, floral nuances, and a subtle spiciness. The wine is already enchanting, but further bottle aging will enhance its refinement. The structure and acidity ensure it will continue to develop effortlessly well beyond 2030.

Favia's 2021 Cerro Sur Red Wine comes from the Rancho Chimiles Vineyard, near Pahlmeyer's Waters Ranch. A blend of 53% Cabernet Franc, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, it seamlessly marries black cherries and vaguely floral notes, plus hints of tobacco on the nose. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, ripe and enveloping, just lovely stuff. The tannins are soft, but the wine is definitely alive, its long finish marked by vibrant acidity.
After meeting Andy Erickson last time at their small property in Coombsville, he was excited to show me the present-future site of Favia in Oakville. In partnership with the Huneeus family, the site consists of 86 acres off Oakville Crossroad, with 65 acres currently planted to a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc. There is a previously approved winery permit from back when Swanson owned the property, so plans are to have a winery and hospitality space onsite. Right now, there's an unused residence and an outbuilding, where we settled in to taste the Favia and Leviathan wines and several other projects Erickson consults for (Arietta, Cervantes, Ellman, Fair Chase).
As we had two vintages to catch up on, we naturally discussed the very different growing conditions in 2021 and 2022.
"I love the tannins in 2021," said Erickson. "They're real structural—not coarse—and the wines are going to age for a long, long time."
"2021 is very harmonious and structured," he continued. "These [2022s] are a little more voluptuous, and I think they're going to be earlier enjoying. But I think we still have a lot of character in the wines, which I'm excited about. The biggest differences are the softer tannins and the fruit intensity.
"We had that warm spell—which, we were really happy with how we handled that. We started harvesting before and during and a little bit after. Coombsville did very well. We have some blocks at Oakville Ranch that have misting and those performed very well."
The wines are normally bottled in July the second year after the vintage, so the 2022s had been in bottle for approximately a month before we tasted them, more than a year prior to their scheduled release. The 2021s should be available in September 2024.

The 2021 Cerro Sur is bright, aromatic and beautifully focused right out of the gate. Cabernet Franc drives the profile in this intensely aromatic, layered red. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mocha, rose petals and blood orange lend notable vibrancy. The Cerro Sur is the most restrained of the Favia reds, but it has a ton of pure pedigree.

Wijnhuis
Favia Erickson Winegrowers in Napa Valley
