Château Rauzan-Ségla and its history

Château Rauzan-Ségla is one of the most renowned Second Growths from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate is located in the Margaux appellation, where finesse and elegance are paramount. Since its acquisition by the luxury group Chanel in 1994, the quality of the wines has been elevated to an exceptionally high level. Combining traditional methods with modern precision, the château is among the most trusted names in Margaux.

The terroir of Margaux and the grapes

The vineyard, comprising approximately 70 hectares, is situated on Margaux's characteristic gravel soils, which ensure optimal drainage and heat retention. The plantings consist primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. This combination produces wines that are both refined and structured, with remarkable aging potential.

The 2014 vintage: balance and elegance

2014 was a surprisingly strong year for Bordeaux. After a cool summer, an exceptionally warm and dry September produced perfectly ripe grapes. For Rauzan-Ségla, this resulted in a wine with remarkable balance, aromatic finesse, and longevity. It's a vintage that experts consider one of the most classic Margaux wines of the decade.

Vinification and maturation

The grapes were carefully hand-picked and vinified plot by plot to maximize the nuances of the terroir. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats, followed by aging for approximately 18 months in French oak barriques, about half of which were new. This gives the wine structure and complexity, without overpowering the finesse of Margaux.

Tasting notes of the 2014 Rauzan-Ségla

Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful sparkle.

Nose: Aromas of violets, red and black cherries, plums, and subtle notes of mint and graphite. Hints of spice and cedar add depth.

Palate: Silky smooth texture with ripe tannins and refined acidity. The mid-palate reveals red fruit, floral accents, and a mineral undertone. The finish is long, with understated power and refinement.

The wine has been highly praised by international critics. Antonio Galloni described the 2014 as "silky, perfumed, and nuanced," scoring 95 points and demonstrating the potential to develop for decades. This assessment confirms the château's status as one of Margaux's top estates.

Why this wine is attractive to sommeliers, enthusiasts and investors

For sommeliers, the 2014 Rauzan-Ségla offers the opportunity to present a Margaux that combines classic elegance with modern precision. For wine lovers, it's a vintage that's already a pleasure to drink, but also offers many years of aging potential. For investors, the combination of high ratings, proven reputation, and limited availability makes it a solid choice for the cellar.

Drinking window

The 2014 Rauzan-Ségla is ready to drink from 2020 and will retain its power and finesse until at least 2044. Anyone opening the wine now will already taste a wonderful balance, but those with patience will be rewarded with even more complexity and depth.
