Description
An impressive Ribera del Duero wine, perfect for lovers of complex red wines with depth and character.
Ribera del Duero, located in the heart of Spain, is known worldwide for its powerful red wines. Situated in the Castilian Highlands, this wine region benefits from a unique combination of altitude, climate and soil types. The 2013 Dominio de Atauta San Juan comes from the Soria subregion, one of the highest areas of Ribera del Duero, with vineyards over 1,000 metres above sea level.
2013 Dominio de Atauta San Juan
The 2013 Dominio de Atauta San Juan is made from 100% Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino. The grapes come from old vines, ranging in age from 85 to 150 years. These vines are grown on chalky soils, which contribute to the complexity and elegance of the wine. The terroir is used to its full potential through the use of sustainable farming methods.
The climate in 2013: decisive for the wine quality
The 2013 vintage was characterized by a relatively cool growing season with a late harvest. This resulted in a slower ripening of the grapes, which ensured a perfect balance between acids and sugars. The wines of this year have an excellent structure and a refined aromatic expression.
Tasting notes of the 2013 San Juan
This wine offers a deep ruby red colour and intense aromas of black cherries, plums and subtle notes of spices and graphite. In the mouth the wine is full and powerful, with well-integrated tannins and a long, elegant finish. It is a wine that combines well with grilled red meat, game dishes and mature cheeses.

They have also resumed producing two single vineyards from small plots that were produced in the past but were never widely distributed. In fact, earlier vintages of the 2013 San Juan were sold exclusively in Puerto Rico, as the name is the same as its capital city. It comes from seven micro-plots that total some 0.47 hectares planted with ancient vines (estimated to be 140 years of age). In this cool and wet vintage, the wine "only" achieved 13.8% alcohol. The vines are biodynamically farmed, and the grapes fermented in 1,000-liter stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts. It matured in second use French oak barrels for 20 months. It's the most perfumed and showy of the 2013s, with an almost Pinot Noir perfume. It probably has the better nose of the range, with an elegant palate. Truly impressive. Only 561 bottles were filled in September 2015. The price has not yet been decided for this or for the 2013 La Roza.
The 2013s were terrific, and scoring them is splitting hairs. Ultimately, it comes down to taste: if you prefer the more mineral Llanos del Almendro or the power of Valdegatiles. The two projects to resume producing San Juan and La Mala are great, but they are produced in tiny quantities, which makes them almost impossible to obtain.

The wine importer Miguel Sánchez's trip to Atauta was a fluke for the entire region. Passing through the Ribera del Duero, he discovered the small valley with its ancient, deserted vineyards, more than 400-year-old wine cellars, ancient cellar vaults and even the stone wine presses from the 13th century were still available. A wine wonderland that has fallen asleep.
The east of the DO was known to be difficult to exploit, as the vines are at a considerable height of nearly 1,000 meters. Miguel Sánchez came, saw and conquered: the youngest Tempranillo vines are 60 years old, the oldest vines are up to 160 years old, really incredible. An immense wealth! They immediately gave exceptionally beautiful results, after the wild plots were kissed awake. With the release of the first wines, it immediately became clear that this was not only one of the best wines from all over the country, but even from all over the world! The strict organic and parcel for parcel separately brought up wines are among the best ever extracted from the grape variety Tempranillo.
