Description
Origin and background of Errazuriz
Viña Errazuriz, located in Chile's Aconcagua Valley, is a winery that stands for quality and cutting-edge terroir wines. The Kai Carmenère line is their flagship collection, dedicated to this emblematic Chilean grape. The 2010 edition is considered one of the purest and most concentrated versions of their Carmenère production.
Aconcagua Valley Region: Climate and Soil
The Aconcagua Valley combines a cooler proximity to the ocean with warm Mediterranean days, resulting in optimal apple ripeness and preserved acidity. The grapes grow on a belt of fertile, well-drained soils, resulting in elegant fruit with minerality and depth.
The grapes and harvest of Kai Carmenère 2010
This wine is made of 96% Carmenère, supplemented with 4% Petit Verdot. The grapes were hand-picked in the first weeks of May. During the harvest, thorough selection takes place on sorting tables, ensuring only perfectly ripe bunches are used.
Vinification and barrel maturation
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at 24–28°C. Controlled maceration, aeration pumpovers, and temperature control produce rich color and concentrated tannins. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barriques. The addition of Petit Verdot adds structure, spice, and freshness.
Color, odor and flavor profile
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, inky purple color with a black core. The bouquet is intense: dark fruit such as cassis and blueberries, complemented by notes of eucalyptus, black olives, graphite, and subtle spices.
The palate offers a firm structure with a full body, ripe and supple tannins, and powerful acidity. Flavor notes include black fruit, spices, cocoa, dark chocolate, and a hint of mint. The finish is long, complex, and elegant with mineral and spicy notes.
Reviews and storage potential
The vintage received consistently high scores of around 92 points, with praise for its complexity, depth, and balance. Critics also emphasized that this wine has great potential for evolution.

Chile deserves the top prize of all 'new' wine countries. Mainly due to the fact that the wines of this country have found a connection with the taste of many wine lovers, wherever in the world, at a record pace. There are of course special reasons for this success. The climate and soil type are ideal here and the classic European grape varieties were already present. Yet it is mainly thanks to the vision of people like Eduardo Chadwick-Errázuriz that these benefits were so quickly translated into resounding success. Exactly 140 years ago, Maximiano Errázuriz planted his vineyard in Panquehue, at the foot of the highest mountain in the Andes chain. The cool fall winds, proximity to the Aconcagua River and annual rainfall of only 25 cm make this an ideal area for wine growing. His great-grandson Eduardo Chadwick-Errázuriz has added a number of plots since 1990; they are planted with the grape varieties that best suit the specific soil and microclimate. As a result, in addition to the classic cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, the merlot, shiraz and carmenère also benefit from this earthly paradise for wine growing. Viña Errázuriz has since grown to become the absolute top of Chilean wine producers.
