Opus One 2009: background and domain
Opus One is the iconic joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, founded in the late 1970s. Their goal: to create a wine that combines the finesse of Bordeaux with the power of Napa Valley. The estate is located in Oakville, Napa Valley, with vineyards in and around To Kalon Vineyard, renowned for its deep, well-draining soils. This location, with warm days and cool nights, allows for a long growing season and produces grapes with intensity and balance.
Grape varieties and blend of 2009
The 2009 is a classic Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon as the main ingredient. The exact composition: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon , 9% Cabernet Franc , 6% Petit Verdot , 3% Merlot , and 1% Malbec . This composition produces a wine with both power and aromatic depth, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot providing structure and freshness, while Merlot and Malbec add roundness and fruity notes.
Harvest conditions and vinification
2009 was characterized by mild growth and a balanced harvest period. The grapes reached full ripeness without excessive heat peaks, allowing them to retain their natural acidity. Hand-harvesting and strict selection guaranteed only the finest fruit. Fermentation proceeded traditionally, with approximately three weeks of skin maceration for maximum color and tannic structure. The wine was aged for 18 months in new French oak, after which bottle rest allowed for further integration.
Tasting notes: colour, aroma and flavour
Colour: Deep dark ruby red, still vibrant for an aged wine.
Aroma: A rich bouquet of cassis, blackberry, and black cherry, complemented by notes of graphite, bay leaf, and subtle floral nuances. With the aroma, cocoa, tobacco, and a hint of truffle also emerge.
Palate: The 2009 combines a silky texture with layered depth. It has the charm and roundness of the 2007, but also the power and dark undertones of the 2008. Ripe black fruit, refined tannins, and energetic acidity combine to create a long, precise finish.
Evaluation and drinking window
The 2009 was highly rated with a score of 94+ . The wine was praised for its seamless balance and combination of elegance and power. With a little air, the wine can be enjoyed now, but a few years in the cellar will bring added refinement. The recommended drinking window runs from 2019 to 2039 , making this vintage an excellent choice for both the short and long term.
Please note: this wine is over 15 years old. Wine is a natural product; it's always exciting to see how a bottle develops. Some bottles still show wonderful freshness and length, while others may be more mature.
Gastronomy and sommelier advice
Serve around 16–18°C in large glasses. The 2009 pairs beautifully with roasted sirloin steak, rack of lamb, game dishes, or mushroom risotto. Hard cheeses like aged Comté or Pecorino also complement its layered character and mature structure. Decanting (1–2 hours) is recommended to fully reveal the aromatic complexity.
For the investor
Opus One is one of the most sought-after California wines. The 2009 combines excellent scores, a drinking window until at least 2039, and a proven reputation on the secondary market. Original wooden boxes and optimal storage enhance its investment value and liquidity.

From: Opus One – Past, Present and Future: 1979-2012 (Jun 2013)
The 2009 Opus One is impeccable. It brings together the silkiness of the 2007 with the power and darkness of the 2008, a combination that is hugely appealing, to say the least. With a little air, the 2009 can be enjoyed young, but it is best cellared for at least a few years, which will allow some of the baby fat to drop off. The blend is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 1% Malbec.
