Description
The history of Masseto and its origins in Bolgheri
Masseto emerged from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in Bolgheri, Tuscany. The region was relatively unknown for red wine, but quickly gained recognition for the quality of its wines. Masseto, a single-vineyard Merlot, quickly became an icon. Since 2005, the estate has been owned by the Frescobaldi family. Bolgheri's maritime climate with warm summers and cooling sea breezes provides ideal conditions for the maturation of Merlot. The clayey soil of the Masseto vineyard is rare in the area and forms the basis for the character of the wine.
Wines from Masseto and Tenuta dell'Ornellaia
Masseto is a 100% Merlot and stands completely on its own next to the wines of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. Ornellaia itself produces, among other things, the Bordeaux blend of the same name, Le Serre Nuove and Le Volte. Masseto, however, is the showpiece and is only made in years with perfect maturation conditions. Since 2019, Masseto has its own wine cellar, separate from Ornellaia.
2007 Masseto: grapes, climate and vinification
The 2007 growing season had a warm and dry summer, preceded by a mild winter and early flowering. The grapes were able to ripen optimally while retaining structure and freshness. The 2007 Masseto is made from 100% Merlot, harvested in the first week of September. The grapes were hand-picked and strictly selected. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and maturation of 24 months in new French oak barrels. This was followed by bottle maturation of at least twelve months before release.
Color, aroma and taste of 2007 Ornellaia Masseto
The 2007 Masseto has a deep, dark ruby colour. The nose is intense and layered, with aromas of ripe black cherries, plums, mocha, graphite, leather and subtle wood tones. On the palate it is full and powerful with ripe dark fruit, refined tannins and a balanced acidity. The structure is firm but elegant, with a lingering finish in which cocoa, spices and a hint of minerality resonate. This vintage is perfect to drink now, but can also age further. Suckling ends his review with: "....Find the wine!"

The estate’s 2007 Masseto is fabulous. Loads of black cherry, blackberry and cassis are intermingled with minerals, violets and French oak. This is an especially sensual Masseto that impresses for its clarity, intensity and length. The wine’s pedigree is impossible to miss, in fact in one of my blind tastings it was immediately identifiable; the class and sheer personality of Masseto came through in spades. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

Wow! Licorice, dried violets, blackberries, blueberries, and a touch of cedar on the nose. Full bodied and firm with a tight and refined fruit character. The nose is unbelievable, but the palate is holding back. This has everything, but it needs time to really come together. Please don't touch this until at least 2015. Find the wine

From: Masseto Retrospective at the Country Music Hall of Fame (Jan 2020)
Rich, sumptuous and exotically beautiful, the 2007 Masseto is off the charts. The year got off to a very warm, dry start, but then cooler weather in August allowed for the vines to find their balance. All the best elements of Masseto and the house style come together in this truly memorable wine. Dark red fruit, espresso, mocha and wild flowers flesh out in a resonant, stunningly beautiful Tuscan red that hits all the right notes. Wow!

This wine was tasted as part of a complete retrospective I co-hosted with Masseto winemaker Axel Heinz, singer/songwriter Martina McBride and her husband, producer John McBride that was auctioned off at the Nashville Wine Auction to fund cancer research and treatment.
First made in 1986 as Il Merlot dell’Ornellaia, Masseto has gone on to become one of the most highly sought-after wines in the world. Masseto emerges principally from three Merlot vineyards: ‘Masseto Alto, Masseto Centrale and Masseto Junior.’ The wine sees 3-4 weeks on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel. The lots are aged separately for 12 months in 100% new oak, blended and then the wine is aged for another 12 months in wood. Earlier vintages saw shorter macerations and less time in oak, broadly speaking. Production is around 32,000 bottles. Readers who want to learn more about the history of Masseto might enjoy this article from some years back.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
