The Château La Fleur de Gay estate and its history
Château La Fleur de Gay is located in the prestigious Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank. The estate is run by a family with centuries of roots in the region. Since its founding in the 1980s, the wine has been a tribute to three exceptional terroirs within Pomerol. The estate's approach is traditional, with respect for the terroir and a strong focus on quality and refinement. Spanning a small but highly concentrated area, the estate produces only a very limited amount of wine each year, making availability from older vintages extremely rare.
Climate, location and grape composition
The Château La Fleur de Gay vineyards are situated in one of Pomerol's most prized locations, with a combination of clay and gravel soils ideal for Merlot. The plantings consist primarily of Merlot, supplemented with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The temperate maritime climate, with warm summers and ample rainfall, ensures ideal ripening of the grapes. The vines are harvested by hand and carefully selected to vinify only the finest fruit.
Vinification and maturation of the wine
Château La Fleur de Gay is vinified in temperature-controlled concrete vats, followed by approximately 18 months of aging in brand-new French oak barriques. The choice of exclusively new barrels underscores the commitment to complexity, structure, and long-lasting potential. This traditional method results in a wine with layered character, finesse, and great aromatic intensity. Only the finest barrels are selected for the final blend.
The 1990 Château La Fleur de Gay – a grand Pomerol
The 1990 vintage is considered one of Bordeaux's greatest vintages of the twentieth century. For Château La Fleur de Gay, this resulted in a wine of power, concentration, and excellent balance. The wine is made primarily from Merlot, supplemented with Cabernet Franc, sourced from old, low-yielding vines.
After over 30 years of aging under optimal conditions, the wine is now at its peak. The color is a deep ruby red with subtle signs of evolution. On the nose, the wine opens with aromas of black cherries, dried flowers, truffle, and delicate spices. On the palate, it is supple, elegant, and silky, with a full body, ripe tannins, and a refined finish that lingers for minutes.
Wine is a natural product, and it's always special to discover how a wine has evolved. The 1990 still shows itself vibrant and expressive, with a perfect balance between ripe fruit notes and tertiary aromas. This is a wine that will not improve any further, but is now showing its full potential.
Who is this wine an absolute must-try for?
This wine is highly recommended for the discerning wine lover, professional sommelier, or serious wine investor. The combination of an iconic winery, a legendary vintage, and very limited availability makes this bottle a valuable addition to any cellar or wine list. The wine has also proven to be an excellent investment, with strong price appreciation over the past decades.
