Rathfinny Estate in Sussex

Rathfinny Estate is located in the heart of the South Downs in Sussex. The winery was founded in 2010 by Mark and Sarah Driver with a clear vision: to produce English sparkling wine that could stand alongside Europe’s finest. From day one, they focused on quality and a sustainable approach. Today, Rathfinny is recognized as one of the leading producers of premium English Sparkling Wine.

History and development

What started as a bare farm and rolling hills quickly transformed. In 2012, the first vines were planted. Now, more than 90 hectares of vineyards stretch across the estate. Production has grown steadily, yet Rathfinny keeps a tight focus. They only work with grapes grown on their own land. Everything happens on site — from handpicking the grapes to aging the bottles in their cellars.

The vineyards in Sussex

The vineyards sit on chalk-rich soils, similar to those found in Champagne. This terroir is ideal for sparkling wines. The main grape varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The gently sloping hills facing the sea create wines with bright acidity and delicate aromas. Rathfinny works with low yields to ensure concentrated flavors in the final wine.

Sussex benefits from a mild maritime climate. Summers are not overly hot but long enough for proper ripening. Cool nights preserve freshness, while the proximity to the sea reduces frost risks.
