EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED JULY 2026
The Bernard family (Domaine de Chevalier) also produces the CLOS DES LUNES – Lune D'Argent, made in the Sauternes appellation. We had the opportunity to taste this wine ourselves, as did the first wine journalists; this is likely to become one of the best white wines produced by Domaine de Chevalier, and considering the great price, it could well become the highest-scoring white Bordeaux. 2023 looks set to be an exceptional vintage for white Bordeaux wines. Clos Des Lunes is a Bordeaux Blanc (dry wine) located in the Sauternes appellation and made from old Sauvignon and Sémillon vines. This is a very high-quality white wine at a very affordable price!
The Lune D'Argent possesses the fresh and floral sweetness of the Sémillon from its favorite terroir, combined with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc for liveliness and brilliance; it is a unique sensation for the connoisseur! Spring white flowers and citrus peel express themselves purely. Intense, full flavor with controlled power. The lively and flavorful acidity balances the whole. Refined finish. This wine pairs wonderfully with seafood (langoustines, scallops, shellfish), fish, cheese (Comté, blue cheeses), and white meat.
FUN FACT: This is a wine from an exceptional terroir and shares Château Yquem, Château d'Arche, and Château Guiraud as neighbors. In the Attachment tab, you will find the official factsheet for this fine wine. We will automatically send it to you upon ordering this wine, and if you pick it up at our beautiful, climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, you will also receive a nice pick-up discount.
In 2011, Olivier Bernard of Domaine de Chevalier launched his Clos des Lunes project in Sauternes, working with approximately 60 hectares of vineyards distributed across five different communes, but primarily Sauternes itself, Bommes, and Barsac. The fruit is harvested by hand, plot by plot, sometimes in multiple "attempts" to select only the ripe bunches; pressing is a whole lot of work; and vinification takes place in 50-hectoliter vats and, for the best fruit, in barrels. A selection of the best barrels is then isolated to be bottled separately under the Lune d'Or label. These wines contain approximately 70% Sémillon, and although this variety is undeniably the best white cépage of Bordeaux, it also presents a challenge, as Sémillon takes time to reveal its hand, add texture, and develop an aromatic range, only with some age in the bottle. This terroir of Clos des Lunes is a beautiful hilly vineyard planted with old Sémillons and Sauvignon Blancs. The area covers 33 hectares, comprising 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc. The average age of the vineyard there is 30 years. The vines originate from two complementary terroirs: the Sauternes terroir, which consists of deep gravel with underground springs that give the wine strength, and the Bommes terroir, which consists of gravelly soils on a subsoil of clay and limestone that contributes to the wine's freshness.
WINE AND FOOD SUGGESTIONS
Oysters or seafood platter
The briny minerality and fresh acidity of Lune d'Argent perfectly enhance the salty taste of shellfish and oysters.
Pan-fried scallops with beurre blanc
The creaminess of the sauce and the delicate scallop meat are beautifully balanced by the freshness and light oak notes of the wine.
Grilled chicken with lemon and Provençal herbs
The structure of the wine carries the light meat and spicy elements well, while the acidity refreshes the dish.
Pasta with salmon and dill cream sauce
The round body of the wine complements the creamy sauce, while the citrusy freshness accentuates the salmon.
Asparagus with hollandaise sauce
The typical challenge of asparagus is perfectly tempered by the combination of fresh acidity and ripe notes in the wine.

The 2020 Lune d'Or is one of the finest vintages of this Sémillon-dominant bottling that Bernard and his team have produced to date. Unwinding in the glass with notions of crisp orchard fruit, nectarine, pastry cream and a deft touch of youthful reduction, it's medium-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, with a tightly wound core, racy acids and a saline finish. The missing ingredient, as is almost always the case when Sémillon is concerned, is time, which will see this wine develop considerably more texture and dimension, but its starting point is already impressive.
In 2011, Domaine de Chevalier's Olivier Bernard launched his Clos des Lunes project in Sauternes, working with some 60 hectares of vineyards distributed through five different communes but principally Sauternes itself, Bommes and Barsac. The fruit is harvest by hand, plot by plot, sometimes in multiple "tries" to select only the ripe bunches; pressing is whole bunch; and vinification is in 50-hectoliter vats and, for the best fruit, barrels. A selection of the best barrels is then isolated to be bottled separately under the Lune d'Or label. These wines contain around 70% Sémillon, and even though this variety is indisputably Bordeaux's finest white cépage, it also imposes a problem, in that Sémillon takes time to show its cards, putting on texture and developing aromatic range only with some age in bottle. To that end, Bernard is releasing a mixed case of older vintages later this year, so I took some time out from tasting en primeur to look at the wines. They do indeed evolve very gracefully, and I hope that they will open readers' eyes to the forgotten appeal of dry Sémillon from Bordeaux. Since 2016, Bernard has gone over to Diam closures, which has essentially eliminated bottle variation (and any hint of oxidative evolution), guaranteeing the wines' longevity. The success of dry Sémillon is key to the future of Sauternes-Barsac, so this is an important initiative not just for Bernard, but for the region.

From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Lune d'Or has a strict, stony nose with touches of grapefruit and yellow plum filtering through with aeration. Quite reserved, yet well defined. The palate is well balanced with a touch of bitter lemon and orange rind on the entry, fine weight, waxy-textured with grapefruit a dab of ginger on the finish. This is a delightful Lune d'Or that deserves three or four years in bottle.
