Apostelhoeve Pinot Gris 2025 from Maastricht is a rich, aromatic white wine with ripe fruit and a remarkably soft structure.

Apostelhoeve Pinot Gris 2025 from Maastricht

De Apostelhoeve is situated on the sunny slopes of the Louwberg near Maastricht and is one of the most famous wine estates in the Netherlands. The combination of calcareous soils and a cool climate produces wines with tension, ripeness, and a distinct style of their own. The Pinot Gris is one of the estate's most expressive wines and clearly demonstrates how this grape develops in South Limburg.

Pinot Gris on calcareous soils

Pinot Gris originates in Burgundy and is internationally known by names such as Pinot Grigio and Grauburgunder. This grape clearly feels at home on the calcareous slopes around Maastricht. The soils provide structure and freshness, while the relatively cool climate preserves the aromatic intensity. This results in a wine that is ripe and expressive, yet retains balance and refinement.

Style and vinification

The style of this Pinot Gris is rich and aromatic, with an emphasis on ripe fruit and a soft texture. Through controlled fermentation and careful aging, the wine retains its fresh acidity, while the natural richness of the grape is fully expressed. The result is a wine that is both accessible and layered, with sufficient structure to be suitable for gastronomic pairings as well.

Color, aroma and taste of Apostelhoeve Pinot Gris

In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant golden-yellow color. The aroma is distinctly aromatic, with notes of tropical fruit such as mango, pineapple, and lychee. On the palate, the wine is rich and full, with a fresh start and a soft, slightly rounded structure. The taste is dominated by ripe exotic fruit, with a subtle sweet impression that remains beautifully balanced by the acidity. The finish is smooth and persistent.

Wine and food

This Pinot Gris is versatile at the table. It pairs excellently with Asian cuisine, where the ripe fruit and light roundness complement spicy and mildly hot dishes. The wine also comes into its own with pasta, risotto, or poultry dishes. Thanks to the combination of freshness and ripeness, it can be used with both lighter and slightly richer dishes.

Wijngaard Apostelhoeve is one of the most famous and beautiful vineyards in the Netherlands. The winery is located south of the city of Maastricht on the Louwberg, an extension of the Cannerberg on the west side of the Jeker valley.

Wine grapes were grown in the Jeker valley as early as the Middle Ages. Around 1600 the 'Little Ice Age' ended this. Hugo Hulst, fruit grower, decided to build another vineyard at De Apostelhoeve in 1970. As a result, Apostelhoeve has now become the oldest functioning wine company in the Netherlands. Currently, this beautiful winery has an area of 6 hectares that is used for viticulture.

The soil consisting of pebble and marl with a layer of loess on top lends itself perfectly to the grape varieties: pinot gris, riesling, auxerrois and rivaner. Only white wines are made from these grape varieties, which are related in style and production to wines from Alsace and which also have a wonderful fresh, mineral taste.

Wijnhuis Apostelhoeve always works very carefully with all its processes. Take, for example, the harvest of the grapes. This is seen by this wine house as one of the most crucial steps in the winemaking process. The time of harvest is mainly determined by the ripeness of the grape, as measured by sugar, acid and tannin levels with winemakers making their decision to choose according to the wine style they want to produce. The weather can also be the roster of harvesting with the threat of heat, rain, hail and frost that can damage the grapes and cause various vine diseases.
