Persoonlijke gegevens
Sylvain owns 0.39 hectares of the Premier Cru Champs-Gains. The vines are quite old, about 60 years old, and produce a wine that is quite full-bodied with a solid mineral structure. It is one of Morey's finest Chassagnes. Morey's Chassagne Montrachet Rouge Les Champs-Gains is an attractive, fleshy wine. This red Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru is a fantastic Pinot Noir from very old vines originating from the Premier Cru Morey vineyard Champs-Gain. This refined Pinot Noir has aromas of red fruit that practically burst out of the glass: cherries, raspberries, redcurrants, followed by a finish of spices and subtle wood notes.

Sylvain Morey is a scion of a family whose winemaking history dates back 400 years, in Chassagne-Montrachet. He is the son of Jean-Marc Morey, a respected winemaker from the 1980s to 2014, and the brother of winemaker Caroline Morey, who is the wife of Pierre Yves Colin . As expected, Sylvain Morey also studied oenology in Beaune and Dijon. After gaining work experience in France and California, Sylvain returned to Burgundy. Shortly thereafter, in 1996, the desire to discover more and a meeting with Ludmila led him to the Luberon, a large oyster-shell-shaped vineyard in the heart of Provence, north of Aix.
In 2014, Sylvain's father, Jean-Marc Morey, decided to split his eight-hectare estate. Sylvain and his sister Caroline (wife of Pierre-Yves Colin ) each received four hectares. Sylvain's plots are spread across the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, and Saint-Aubin. He also inherited the family home at the bottom of the village. That same year, he produced his first Burgundy wines under the Domaine Sylvain Morey label. With his deep Burgundian roots and the strong self-confidence gained from his two decades of winemaking in the Luberon, Sylvain has already made an impression in the wine world with his confident viticultural style. His wines, both red and white, display immense elegance and power, an excellent mineral texture, finesse, and age well. Sylvain Morey is a name to watch.

Sylvain Morey is the son of Jean-Marc Morey from Chassagne-Montrachet, whose wines adorned our range for many years. After Jean-Marc's retirement In 2014, the vineyard plots were divided between Sylvan and his sister Caroline.
The driven Sylvain left Burgundy much earlier, determined to find his own way and had founded a wine estate in the Luberon, much further south. His experience on this own project, combined with the deep knowledge he gained from his father, has made Sylvain a thoughtful yet confident winemaker, one who respects the traditional way his father worked, but also brings out his own sensibility. He immediately planned to split his time between Chassagne and Luberon and keep the same cellar where his father has always worked. With his first releases in 2014, his mark on the wines is clear. The wines have a little more power than those of his father, are richer in structure but have retained the substantial mineral side. Sylvain's Burgundian heritage really shows his high standards of production. Harvests here can be quite late due to the cooler and relatively dry climate. All the fruit for Sylvain's wines is harvested by hand, with a strict selection made in the vineyards. Fermentations for both white and red are allowed to start spontaneously with native yeasts. He tries to make a soft extraction for the red wines with minimal remontages and no pigeage (stirring the must). Once fermentation is complete, the wines are aged in various sized barrels or concrete tanks before bottling with only minimal filtration when required.
