Description
Domaine Françoise & Denis Clair is located in the village of Santenay, in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. Since its foundation in 1986, the estate has developed into a valued producer of both white and red wines, with vineyards in Santenay, Saint-Aubin and Puligny-Montrachet, among others. Denis Clair was at the cradle of the modern style of the estate and his son Jean-Baptiste is now in charge. The philosophy of the house combines respect for terroir with precise and pure vinification.
Unique terroir of Puligny-Montrachet 'La Garenne'
The Premier Cru vineyard 'La Garenne' is located in the higher part of Puligny-Montrachet, where chalky soils and good drainage ensure fresh, mineral and layered wines. The location on a slight slope with south-east exposure promotes the ripening of the Chardonnay grapes, without loss of tension and freshness. The cool microclimate contributes to the finesse for which Puligny-Montrachet is known.
Chardonnay in top form
The wine is 100% Chardonnay. The grapes are harvested by hand, usually in early October, depending on the ripening season. Selection is done directly in the vineyard and again on the sorting table upon arrival in the cellar. After a soft pressing, static settling of the juice follows.
Vinification and maturation in oak
Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, a small percentage of which are new, to add structure without overpowering the fruit. Malolactic fermentation is allowed, which contributes to roundness and balance. Maturation lasts for around 12 months on the lees, with regular bâtonnage in the first months to deepen the complexity.
Colour, smell and taste of Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne
The wine presents itself with a bright golden yellow color and fine shine. In the nose delicate notes of white flowers, ripe pear, citrus zest and a subtle hint of toasted bread and wet stones. In the mouth it is full and energetic, with a mineral core and a refined balance between fruit, acidity and oak influence. The long finish is characterized by freshness and light saltiness.
