The Domaine Anita Moulin-à-Vent Reine de Nuit 2023 is a powerful and refined Beaujolais cru that combines the concentration of Moulin-à-Vent with remarkable elegance. Behind this wine is Anita Kuhnel , a former professional cyclist, who dedicates her tireless energy and discipline to crafting wines of exceptional precision.

Anita works exclusively with high-quality terroirs and produces wines from the Gamay grape that have received numerous awards. For the Reine de Nuit ("Queen of the Night"), the grapes are harvested at night, when the temperature is still cool. This preserves the fruity freshness and results in a wine with pure aromas and a refined structure.

Origin & terroir

The grapes come from the lieu-dit "Aux Caves" within the Moulin-à-Vent appellation in Beaujolais . This vineyard is situated at an altitude of approximately 240 meters, south-southeast-facing, on sandy soil with manganese inclusions. The vines, which average 40 years old, yield small, concentrated grapes that form the core of this expressive cru.

Vinification of Reinde Nuit

100% Gamay, harvested entirely by hand and rigorously selected in the vineyard. After complete destemming, a four-day cold maceration follows, followed by approximately 24 days of fermentation. During this period, the cap is pressed daily to maximize the extraction of color and flavor. The wine then matures for six months in a combination of oak barrels and cement tanks.

Tasting note 2023 Domaine Anita Moulin-à-Vent Reine de Nuit

In the glass, the Reine de Nuit displays a vibrant ruby red color. The nose is intense and elegant, with notes of ripe grapes, red berries, raspberries, and subtle floral notes. On the palate, a creamy texture combines with fresh acidity and refined tannins, resulting in a wine with length, tension, and a mineral signature. James Suckling awarded this vintage 97 points , calling it "one of the most exceptional wines that redefines the boundaries of Beaujolais."

Serving tips & wine and food pairing

Serve at 14–16°C in a large glass. Excellent with rosé roast rack of lamb, duck breast, poultry with mushrooms, or truffle risotto. Also delicious with soft cheeses or refined vegetarian dishes. This wine is already wonderfully accessible, but will develop further in complexity over the coming years.

Anita Kuhnel used to be a professional cyclist. With the same drive, she now puts all her energy into making Beaujolais wines at Domaine Anita. Anita only uses high-quality terroirs for this. With this she makes wines from the Gamay grape that has already received several high scores from renowned critics, including Robert Parker, James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast.

Anita Kuhnel will retire from cycling in 2015 and will make it her mission to create top Beaujolais. She buys carefully selected terroirs in the crus Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, Chénas and Fleurie. The de-stalking of grapes and the use of wood give extra depth to her wines. Sulfite use is kept to a minimum. Her wines are particularly rich, concentrated wines that live up to the full potential of Gamay and also have a very good aging potential. Chénas is one of the smallest crus of Beaujolais and therefore a Beaujolais not often seen. The soils contain a lot of granite, which causes the vines to root more deeply. That gives small, concentrated grapes with a lot of taste. Morgon is one of the richest Beaujolais styles. The soils consist of granite and schist, of volcanic origin. With a lot of iron in the soil, the wines have more structure and earthy notes. What is exceptional about Moulin-à-Vent is the high amount of manganese in the granite soils. This manganese limits the yield, making the wines extra concentrated and deeper in taste, with more tannins. It is the fullest of all Beaujolais crus, and can also age very well. In Fleurie, Anita makes the Fleurie Poncié, which stands out for its strong floral, aromatic character.
