Description
Today, Daniel Landi is one of Spain's pioneers of the new generation of oenologists. Thanks to him, Spanish Grenache has been given a new definition: that of finesse and elegance. Daniel works with utmost respect for the terroir and its environment. All plots are cultivated in biodynamics. His wines are an example of purity and lightness. For lovers of great Burgundy. The famous top wine from Jimenez/Daniel Landi - 100% Grenache produced in an organic way and raised in French oak. 2011 is the first year that winemaker Daniel Landi makes this wine under his own name after leading the Jimenez Landi family domain for 8 years. Daniel Landi is also co-owner of the rising star Comando G. VitÃcola Mentridana is the successor to Dani Landi Viticultor. Dani comes from Méntrida and went through the same process as his childhood friend Curro. They studied oenology and started working at small family bodegas. Ultimately, they each created their own project. For Dani it was Comando G and for Curro it was Fedellos. And now their paths converge again: Dani decided to house all his vineyards from the Méntrida appellation in a separate bodega: VitÃcola Mentridana. And Curro is in charge of the day-to-day management and makes the wines, always with the help of Dani.
In the new project VitÃcola Mentridana, this Mentridano is a classic Mentrida. Made only from Garnacha grapes from the village of Méntrida, the main town of the appellation of the same name. 100% Garnacha from old vines, biodynamically farmed vineyards. The grapes are fully fermented with full bunches. So no dezipping takes place. Obviously no addition of foreign yeasts or enzymes. Non-interventionist élevage of about 7 to 8 months on large wooden tanks of 3 to 4000 liters. Only addition of sulphite just before bottling.
The El Mentridano has a fresh bright red color in the glass. In the nose an explosion of red fruit, wild strawberries, raspberries and red berries, supplemented with the typical terroir herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Wonderfully fresh, yet with power and substance. Not the ethereal style of Comando G, but heavily influenced by it. Very tasty !

The 2021 El Mentridano was produced with Garnacha grapes from the family in the village of Méntrida (and therefore not Gredos) on sandstone granite soils, producing a light and approachable style through fermenting the full clusters with a very short maceration and an élevage in 3,000- and 3,700-liter foudres for seven months. It's quite open and appley, with hints of herbs and red berries. It's a warmer zone than Gredos, and the wine is ripe without excess with 14.3% alcohol and a pH of 3.4. It has less grip than the wines from Gredos but is balanced through the shorter maceration. 17,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.
The new kid on the block is VitÃcola Mentridana, a family and friends project from Dani Landi (Comando G) and Curro Bareño (Ca' di Mat and Fedellos) with family vineyards and some of the brands that used to belong to Landi. The first vintage is 2021, but the 2020s are already labeled and sold through this new project. In total, they have 15 hectares in Méntrida and Real de San Vicente, some owned, some rented, but all are worked by them organically (and in due time they should get the certification). Production is around 40,000 bottles. It's a great new addition to Gredos.

The Sierra de Gredos is an area of rugged granite peaks, forests and hilltop towns southwest of Madrid. The combination of high altitude, free draining granitic soils, and a long growing season gives it a unique micro-climate. Vines cling to scree-slopes like mountain goats, many of these sites were abandoned decades ago, but a new generation of growers is rediscovering them.
Dani Landi was one of the pioneers working with the old vines here, making elegant, mineral wines, that are redefining what was previously viewed as a workhorse variety into something that can rival the elegance and finesse of some of the world’s most sought after reds. Curro Barreño, one half of brilliant Ribeira Sacra project Fedellos, also grew up in this area. He’s a childhood friend of Dani, sharing many bottles together and winemaking influences. Since 2021 Curro has taken over responsibility for Dani’s vineyards in Méntrida, and is making wines under the VitÃcola Mentridana label. Curro’s building on Dani’s meticulous foundations, interpreting the vineyards, and working with a light touch in the winery. Curro is happy to have come home to make wine in the area where he grew up, and to see the evolution of wines in the area which are becoming modern classics, graceful wines we love to drink.
