Pieropan is a historic winery in northeastern Italy, best known for its Soave wines. Since the 2000s, the family has also produced Valpolicella Superiore in the hills of Cellore d'Illasi, east of Verona. The vineyards are situated at altitudes of 300 to 500 meters, are certified organic, and are entirely hand-worked. Ruberpan is the result of the ambition to produce Valpolicella in a style that is pure, refined, and distinctive.
Grapes and vinification
Ruberpan is a blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Croatina grapes. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted. After a gentle pressing, fermentation with skin maceration follows for approximately 12 days. The wine then ages for 18 to 24 months in large and medium-sized French oak barrels, some of which are new. After bottling, the wine is aged for a further period in the bottle before being released.
Character and style
In the glass, Ruberpan displays a bright ruby red color. The aroma is open and inviting, with notes of ripe cherry, violets, roses, black pepper, and a subtle woody note. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with lively acidity, refined tannins, and an elegant spicy note. The finish is dry, balanced, and lingering. Ruberpan is not a heavy Valpolicella, but a precise and expressive wine with depth.

The oak aging is beautifully integrated, the freshness is remarkable for the region, and the wine is excellent to drink both young and after several years in the bottle. The 2021 Valpolicella Superiore Ruberpan wafts up with a florist shop bouquet that blends chalk dust with dried violets, lavender, charred wood and exotic spice. It displays textures of pure silk, supple and enveloping yet lifted and energetic, with crisp wildberry fruits and blue and purple inner florals resonating throughout. The 2021 leaves a coating of fine tannins and a peppery tinge, tapering off long and classically dry. A total pleasure to taste.

The Italian winery Pieropan is located in Soave, near Verona in the famous wine region of Veneto.
Leonildo Pieropan is considered the godfather of Soave. The wines are made from the grapes garganega and trebbiano from the hills around the city of Soave. The special cuvée La Rocca, made from late-picked grapes, is brought up on French oak and wins many international prizes. Andrea and Dario continue the work of their father and, in addition to the famous Soave, also make red wines of exceptional quality. After studying regional grape varieties, terroir and microclimate, the company bought vineyards and real estate in Cellore d'Ilasi (Valpolicella and Amarone) in 1999. A beautiful Valpolicella, Ruberpan and a complex and rich Amarone are now made from corvina, corvinone, rondinella and croatina veronese. The old 15th century monastery on the domain, Villa Cipolla, is currently being restored and converted into a luxury agriturismo.
