Description
The generosity of Crozes-Hermitage is well known to lovers of Rhône Cru wines based on the noble Syrah grape. Crozes-Hermitage is located in the northern Rhône appellation, which offers the greatest wealth of expression. In terms of surface area and number of winemakers, it is the primary vineyard area of Cave de Tain (16 times larger than the Hermitage vineyard), where we find two types of soil: granite and galets (small surface stones) in infinite combinations:
- pebbly and filtering soils of the Rhône or the Isère in the south
- predominantly granite soils in a cooler climate in the north
Crozes-Hermitage stretches around the Hermitage hill, and Cave de Tain boasts the finest vineyards there. Crozes-Hermitage has been classified as an AOC (Provincial Designation of Origin) for red and white wines since 1937. Important rules are that the alcohol content must be at least 10% and the yield must not exceed 45 hectoliters per hectare. The red wine must be composed of at least 85% Syrah grapes and a maximum of 15% Marsanne and Roussanne. The white wine must be composed of Marsanne and Roussanne.
The Cave de Tain Les Hauts du Fief Crozes-Hermitage rouge is an intriguing, complex red Rhône wine. It boasts a captivating aroma of bacon, blackberries, cassis, and a touch of floral notes. It's savory, smoky, and earthy. Concentrated, with fine acidity and ripe tannins, and a very long finish. It can age for up to 10 years. The ultimate dinner wine. A gastronomic delight with grilled meats: duck breast, succulent red meat, and lamb chops. As the wine ages, consider pairing it with game and aged cheeses.
ABOUT CAVE DE TAIN
Undoubtedly the top in the Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage regions. In the Cave de Tain, approximately 370 farmers are united in a company with vision, a passion for quality, and a keen eye for the market. They are leading in the northern Rhône, accounting for over 50% of the production. The vineyards are located on both the right bank (St. Joseph, Cornas, and St. Peray) and the left bank (Crozes Hermitage and Hermitage) of the Rhône, and are within a maximum of 20 kilometers of the Cave. For many international winemakers, the wines produced here are the benchmark for their Syrah production. The crown jewels of the company are its own vineyards on Mount Hermitage. The steeply terraced vineyards with granite soils bring out the best in the Syrah grape. International ratings of between 90 and 100 points are "normal" for these wines. Cave de Tain owns a whopping 25% of this unique wine-growing region. Read more in the Tab: Winery

Black olive and dark loam aromas appear on the nose of the 2019 Crozes Hermitage les Hauts du Fief. It largely shows off the positive aspects of the vintage, sacrificing a bit of aromatic fireworks in favor of power, concentration and richness. Full-bodied and expansive on the palate, it finishes long and velvety.
The largest cooperative cellar in the Northern Rhône, Cave de Tain is a must stop for tourists visiting the region, if for no other reason than it has a large parking lot that sits right at the base of the Hermitage hill, offering a panoramic view up the slope. The wines cover nearly every appellation in the region, excepting Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie, in a range of quality levels and styles. Collectively, the members farm just under 30 hectares of Hermitage, making them that appellation's second-largest landholder. The entry-level wines are often pleasant and well-made, offering decent value for money, while some of the higher-end cuvées are ripe and oaky, maybe even offering too much of both for some consumers.

A chewy, pulpy and serious Crozes-Hermitage with black cherries, roasted meat, roasted peppercorns and charred bark on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with firm tannins. Spicy and vivid with a solid frame of tannins bringing chewiness on the edge at this stage. Try after 2025.

The 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Les Hauts du Fief is vinified from 40-year-old vines grown in various parts of the appellation. Deep purple in color, it exhales ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit alongside traces of forest floor, clove, vanilla and gravel. Although the oak-derived components are obvious at this early stage, there is enough flavor concentration and fruit ripeness to back it all up. It shows ample persistence on the savory finale.

On the left bank of the Rhône, between Lyon and Valence, the Hermitage hill dominates the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. From north to south, the vineyards of Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Saint-Péray spread out on terraces, on the right bank.
On their five cru vineyards, such as in Collines Rhodaniennes, the winegrowers of the Cave de Tain l'Hermitage offer an unparalleled variety of vineyard plantations, with access to all terroirs.
