Description
Fontodi Chianti Classico 2022 from the heart of Tuscany
The Fontodi Chianti Classico 2022 is a refined wine from the heart of the Tuscan Chianti region. It comes from the renowned Conca d'Oro near Panzano, an area renowned for its southerly location and chalky soils. Fontodi has been operating here for decades, fully organically, with a strong focus on the balance between nature and the vineyard. Made from 100 percent Sangiovese, the wine immediately reveals the depth and vibrancy of this grape. The aroma reveals ripe cherries, black currants, leather, and dried herbs. The palate is intense yet balanced, with juicy fruit, crisp acidity, and silky tannins. The 2022 vintage is slightly riper thanks to the warm summer, but retains its freshness and structure. According to Decanter, this wine received 93 points, and Vinous awarded it 91 points. Both emphasize the concentration, elegance, and refined finish of this vintage.
Vinification and maturation of Fontodi Chianti Classico 2022
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected in the cellar. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks, ensuring a pure expression of the fruit. After fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately eighteen months in French oak barrels of various sizes, only a small portion of which are new. This gives the wine additional structure and complexity without the oak being overpowering. The result is a pure and energetic Chianti Classico that truly shines both young and after several years of bottle aging. You can read more about the grape here: Sangiovese .
Fontodi is known as one of the region's leading wineries. The Manetti family, who run the estate, combines experience with a natural approach. Their wines always have a clear identity and a recognizable style. More information about the winery can be found at Fontodi .
Chianti Classico, serving tips and wine-food pairings
This wine originates from the prestigious Chianti Classico region, a region where the combination of altitude, chalky soils, and a Mediterranean climate produces wines with freshness and character. The 2022 Fontodi Chianti Classico is a perfect example. Serve the wine at around 17°C (62°F) and let it air out before pouring to allow the aromas to fully develop. It pairs perfectly with classic Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle with ragù, grilled lamb chops, game, or aged pecorino. This wine is also an excellent choice for an aperitif with Italian cured meats or an antipasti platter.
The Fontodi Chianti Classico 2022 is available at Grandcruwijnen. Order online or pick up at our wine warehouse in Dordrecht.

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2022

Color: Red
Country: Italy
Region: Tuscany
Vintage: 2022
Tense, firm and juicy with sour cherries, raspberry bush, crushed spices, dried blood orange, cocoa and iron on the nose. The medium- to full-bodied palate is structured and well-framed, with vivid acidity driving the fruit. Long and balanced. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

From: Chianti Classico: Riding Out the Storm (Jul 2025)
The 2022 Chianti Classico is a soft, easygoing wine, despite its considerable concentration. Black cherry, dried herbs, mocha, liquorice, new leather and cloves open nicely. In this warm vintage, the goal was to harvest early and extract lightly, both of which worked quite well. In tasting, the 2022 comes across as a bit compact and light in structure relative to the norm for this wine.
- By Antonio Galloni on July 2025
The 2022s at Fontodi are more than worthy follow-ups to the 2021. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti describes 2022 as a year with a wet winter and naturally low yields on the vine going into the more critical summer months. “We lost the entire western portion of our estate, which accounts for 25-30% of our total production,” Manetti reported in describing the effects of the August 15 storm that ripped through parts of Panzano. Manetti was among the producers who opted to pick a touch early rather than risk wines with excessively high sugars. As a result, the wines are a bit shy today and a bit more reticent than they can be. Lighter extractions and a gradual move towards larger format oak are among the stylistic choices that have also given these wines a bit more energy than in the recent past. I was reminded of that when I tasted the 2015 Flaccianello after the current releases. The 2015 remains quite young and just as striking as it has always been. At the same time, the stylistic evolution here over last decade is impossible to miss.
