Description
One of the most famous wineries in Baden is Weingut Salwey. The winery is especially appreciated for its phenomenal wines from Grau-, Weiß and Spätburgunder, which are all among the best wines in Germany. Another specialty is the Weissherbst (rosé type) from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Riesling. The history of the winery goes back to the middle of the 18th century, with Weingut Salwey remaining unchanged in family hands and still located at its original location in Kaiserstuhl, Baden.
The total vineyard management covers 39 hectares with vineyard properties in: Oberrotweiler Kirchberg, Eichberg, Henkenberg and the Glottertaler Eichberg. A new cellar in Niederrotweil provides the much-needed air and space for the planned expansion of 10 hectares of vineyard. Weingut Salwey is a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), which includes the best wineries in Germany.
The Salwey RS (Reserve Salwey) Barrique Oberrotweil comes from the top vineyards of older vines. The wine is matured in barrique (1/3 new filling, 1/3 second filling and 1/3 previous filling). The Barrique RS is a delicious red Spätburgunder or a German Pinot Noir from Baden. This oak-matured Spätburgunder is more intensely red in the glass than its little brothers and the color is deep red but still clear. The Barrique RS Salwey is very elegant and powerful with notes of strawberries, cherries, blackberries and blueberries, but after some swirling also somewhat earthy with notes of leather and espresso. In the mouth the wine has a powerful fruit attack with a core of cherries. Powerful midriff with firm tannin structure. Good storage potential. Put this wine in a line-up with some nice burgundies and don't tell your guests anything. We bet they will be impressed. Delicious with roast wild duck/poultry, creamy, strong cheeses and of course with a Coq au vin.

2014 Salwey Spatburgunder Oberrotweiler Kirchberg GG
RP (93-95)
Reviewed by: Stephan Reinhardt
Drink Date: 2019 - 2030
The 2014 Spätburgunder Oberrotweiler Kirchberg GG is selected from 2.2 hectares of roughly 40-year-old vines on stony, magmatic soils with carbonatite. This Pinot Noir offers a clear and ripe, very intense and aromatic bouquet. It has of red and darker fruits along with delicate herbal, floral, refreshing and almost etheric lime aromas. Perfect concentration. This nose is super ripe but also really fresh, flinty and characterful because of 90% whole clusters. Silky, fresh and clear on the palate, this is a full-bodied, round and elegant Pinot of great intensity. The finish is very juicy and long, but also fresh and firmly-structured. This is a sensual wine of royal grand cru format. Highly recommended. Great finesse and mouthwatering fruit, very deep. This is a very generous Pinot Noir, but it is always the lightest of Konrad Salwey's grands crus. It comes from the shallowest soils and is picked earlier and with lower must weights, along with the Eichberg Pinot Noir.

SALWEY SPÄTBURGUNDER BADEN OBERROTWEIL 2020
Score
91
A powerful, compact and crisp pinot noir that leaps out of the glass at you. Full amarena cherry and blackberry aromas. Although this is not so warm, the 14% alcohol make this pretty feel full and mouth-filling. Soft yet lively finish that has some finesse. Drink or hold.
