Description
In the easternmost part of the Douro near the Spanish border we find Quinta do Vale Meão in the Douro Superior. This very famous quinta is the birthplace of Barca Velha, the most famous and highly praised Portuguese wine. The quinta is owned by Francisco Javier de Olazabal, the great-great-grandson of Dona Antonia. The former director of the Port House Ferreira (until 1999) started making wine from these exceptional vines in 1998 with his son, oenologist Francisco de Olazabal y Almeida. and terroir. In 2000 they launched a Vintage Port on the market for the first time. Their Finest Ruby Reserve is of exceptionally high quality. Quinta do Vale Meão is one of the top in Portugal and you can taste why that is so!
The 2008 Vintage Port from Meão mainly consists of Touriga Franca, supplemented with Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Sousao. The wine matures for 2 years in large oak barrels. This complex Port has a beautiful purple-red color with cassis, blackberries, raspberries, roast notes of oak barrel aging in the nose. With waltzes we also smell subtle spices. On the palate the Port is powerful, juicy ripe black fruit with fine fresh acidity, soft tannins and a lush long aftertaste. Delicious with dark chocolate, nuts and dried fruits. Also great with strong cheeses such as Cabrales, Roquefort, old Cantal and old mature Cheddar

2011 Quinta do Vale Meão Vintage Port
RP (91-93)
Reviewed by:

The 2011 Vintage is a blend of 60% Touriga Franca, 20% Touriga Nacional, 5% Tinta Barroca, 5% Tinta Roriz, 5% Sousao and 5% of other varieties, trodden by foot in lagares. At first I was not too sure of the Quinta do Vale Meao, but just leaving my glass to one side for 30 minutes, it developed promisingly in the glass, offering fragrant scents of California raisin and fresh prune, hints of clove and smoke that are well-defined. The palate is well-balanced, with fine tannins encasing a core of ripe red and black fruit, plus there is a lovely honeyed, almost mellifluous texture towards the finish. This will be one of the more approachable 2011 declared Ports and one that is well worth seeking out. Tasted May 2013.

The 2018 Vintage Port, bottled in July 2020, is a blend of Touriga Franca (60%), Touriga Nacional (20%) and other traditional grapes for the rest, aged for 12 months in 100% chestnut vats this year. It comes in with 90 grams of residual sugar. On the heels of a great performance in 2017 comes another winner this year. With lifted fruit, this finishes fresh and lively but with silky texture and plenty of flavor. It's on the drier side, but very expressive. It never seems too lean, only elegant. A couple of days later, it shows off its pure power too and a certain flavor profile that has hints of dried, unsweetened caramels. This is a beauty, as this estate is making a statement these days for its Ports. It has plenty of room to improve in the cellar, and it could really use a decade or so in the cellar. There were just 4,400 bottles produced.
