Description
Marqués de Murrieta is one of the classic greats in the Rioja. This company only makes high quality wines while adhering to the traditional method of winemaking. A good example of this is this white Capellanía, from a piece of Viura vineyard with the same name and which is part of the famous Castillo Ygay domain.
At Murietta we have the tradition, knowledge and fruit to allow wines to mature for a very long time in the barrel. Examples include the 1986 white Ygay, which was only released after 30 years, and from the 2016 vintage onwards it was also decided to give the Capellania a longer maturation period (barriques, concrete and bottle maturation). The grapes for the white Rioja come from a plot of the Ygay vineyard from which the wine gets its name; it is their highest plot at 485 meters altitude. The grapes were picked on October 3 and 4 from the only six hectares, and the must from pressing the clusters was fermented at 10 degrees Celsius in stainless steel and of course without malolactic fermentation. The low temperature ensures a very long fermentation so that all the beautiful things that the Ygay fruit gives can be absorbed. After fermentation, the wine matures in new French oak barrels (barriques of 225 liters) where the wine matures for 16 months and then it is stored in concrete to further integrate in peace and the wine is then left to mature in the bottle for more than a year. The Cappelania 2017 has 13.5% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity. The long maturation period marks the wine to a great extent. The slow oxidation creates a classic white Rioja aroma with a lot of complexity. Famous for its great culinary versatility!
The Cappelania still has decent oak notes but with some aging this will integrate wonderfully and like all Murrieta wines this is a wine for the medium and long term. Even after a few hours in the glass or after being decanted, the wine becomes wonderfully harmonious. The palate is structured, rich and serious, with a chalky sensation and a long, dry and tasty, almost salty finish. This wine has all the potential to age wonderfully (20+ years). The 2018 wasn't released until mid-May 2023. We recommend decanting the wine a few minutes before serving to allow it to decant and then release its full aromatic potential. Do not drink the wine too cold (as with many high end white wines). Recommended temperature around 12 ° C
This is a beautiful 1.5 liter magnum in a wooden box

July 2022 Week 2, The Wine Advocate
The 2017 Capellanía comes from the earliest harvest in recent times. It's pure Viura from the vineyard that names the wine and was aged in French oak barrels, which comes from the tradition of whites with a long aging in wood that were one of the hallmarks of Murrieta, structured and with good aging potential. These are some of the oldest vines, planted in 1945 at the highest elevation, 485 meters above sea level. The grapes were picked September 13th and 14th, when the bunches were pressed in a vertical press and the must fermented slowly in stainless steel at 10 degrees Celsius without going through malolactic fermentation. The wine matured in French barriques for 24 months, but since 2016, the wines are sharper and they also started introducing a small percentage of American oak barrels. It's 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.23 and 6.58 grams of acidity (tartaric), and it has more integrated oak and is sharper and fresher. It's medium-bodied, with less volume and more length, beautifully textured and tasty. It follows the general path in the winery toward more freshness and elegance. It's even more remarkable given how adverse the natural conditions from 2017 were... 22,920 bottles were filled in March 2021, a much shorter production than the 2016. The wine will change more in 2018 when they started fermenting the wine in concrete.
Marqués de Murrieta is one of the most classical names in Rioja, and they have managed to keep the classical style of the wines but are also completely relevant and up to date with what is happening in the world today. All of their wines come from their own vineyards, which sets them apart from the majority of classical wineries that didn't use to have any vineyards. So, it's a château style winery, a domaine, not a négoce and a small- to medium-size winery. All of the wines are numbered, and they produce a total of a little more than one million bottles. They keep faithful to the use of mostly American oak barrels for their wines, and the aim is for elegance and freshness. The first vintage in the new winery was 2018, but they only open the winery to the public now. So, the wines from 2018, 2019 and 2020 that I tasted are the first ones that fermented in the new winery.
They have finished building their new winery, where they now have plenty of room to work as they have a lot of wines aging in the winery, both in barrel and in bottle. Fermentation will change, and they have introduced concrete for Capellanía and oak vats for the top-of-the-range in reds. In 2022, they celebrate their 175th anniversary. Many congratulations!

Bodegas that bears his name, but is also considered to be the founder of the modern wine trade in the Rioja. Luciano Murrieta was born in 1822 in what was then the Spanish province of Peru. After the independence of Peru, he ended up in London. Here he marveled at the popularity of Bordeaux wines and was inspired by this style of winemaking, where the wines matured in wooden casks for a period of time. In 1852 he exported his first wines and was so successful that other vintners followed his techniques.
Today Marquès de Murrieta is the oldest active wine company in the Rioja. In 1983, the company was acquired by Duke of Creixell, Vincente Cebrián. This preserves the family element of the wine company. After his sudden death in 1996, his children led by Vicente jr took the helm and continued their father's perfectionism.
Vicente (2nd call sign Dalmau) was born in 1970. He spends his youth alternately in Madrid and Galicia, where he spends summers in Pazo Barrantes, the winery that has been owned by his family since the 16th century. His roots and the good times he spent in Galicia have forever given this area a special place in his heart.
After his studies in Madrid, he continued his education in the USA and after returning to Spain he completed his university education (Economics, Business & Law degrees). From that moment on, Vincente will fully focus on his father's company, of which he will lead after his unexpected death in 1996. In the years that followed, he and his sister Cristina revolutionized the bodega in a revolutionary way and the quality of the wines reached very high heights: they are now among the best in the world. The Cebrian-Sagarriga Suarez Llanos family owns two wineries; Marqués de Murrieta (Rioja DOCa) and Pazo de Barrantes (Rías Baixas DO).
The bodega has about 300 hectares of vineyards, and grows grapes such as tempranillo, garnacha, graciano and mazuelo for the red wines, and viura for the white wine. Of course, everything revolves around the highest quality. Tradition also plays a major role: Marqués de Murrieta makes classic Rioja. Tradition, however, is not the same as standstill, because, as Vicente Dalmau's father put it, you must constantly change everything so that everything can remain the same. That's exactly what happens. For example, the family had the old company building demolished and almost exactly the same rebuilt, but with the most modern gadgets. And that is also how she works on the wines: they are getting better, but never lose their identity.
All the vineyards of Finca Ygay (Marqués de Murrieta), together about 300 ha, are located at the bodega and are owned by the family. The now completely renovated Castillo Ygay is the headquarters of Marqués de Murrieta. Finca Ygay has significant differences in soil. The height of the vineyards varies from 300 to 500 m and the area falls under Rioja Alta. These differences in soil conditions give Murrieta the opportunity to produce varied wines.
The relatively cool location makes this area ideal for the production of the most refined wines. The largest vineyard: Valsalado produces the grapes for the Murrieta Reserva. The highest part of the domain is called La Plana. The grapes from this area (Tempranillo and Mazuelo), from old vines on loam, form the basis for the world-famous Gran Reserva Especial Castillo Ygay (which is made only in good years) and the excellent white wine Capellania. This wine, aged for 15 months in French oak; a Burgundian-looking wine, but also a beautiful and modern white Rioja. The somewhat lower Las Canajas vineyard, where Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in the 1980s, has a pebble and calcareous clay soil. Since 1994, the grapes from this area have been the basis for Dalmau, the "modern" Murrieta, named after Vicente Dalmau jr., One of the current owners.
Very rare is the rare white Castillo Ygay from 1986 (100 Parker points!), But still very vital! This wine is an assembly of Viura and Malvasia.
The oenologist Maria Vargas, originally from Argentina, has been responsible for the winery's wines since 1995. A winged statement of her is that oak wood in a wine is like a woman's perfume, it should never predominate. She subtly uses American oak from Pennsylvania and Ohio. Tempranillo is the main blue grape, with smaller quantities of Graciano, Garnacha and Carinena and Marqués de Murrieta is one of the few Bodegas in Rioja to use Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the preparation of their wines. Viura and a very small amount of Malvasia is mainly cultivated as a white grape.
