Driving north along Burgundy's famous Route des Grands Crus in the Côte de Nuits, not long after passing the village of Nuits-St-Georges and the holy grail of vineyards at Vosne-Romanee, just past Clos de Vougeot, come you are in the charming village of Chambolle-Musigny. It's a postcard-perfect town, surrounded by vineyards, and while that description could follow just about any village in Burgundy, there's one difference: unless you know your appellations by heart, you might not realize you're passing by vines from which most of the world's iconic Pinot Noir wines are produced.
Sophie and Alain Meunier-Confuron run one of the best Burgundy domains. Alain has been ensuring one quality improvement after another for years. The vineyards are each a maximum of 1 hectare in size and are located in the main municipalities of the Cotes de Nuits, with appellations such as Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée. The subsoil consists of rocks, sand and marl. The sticks are sometimes more than 90 years old. The wine is not filtered, but clarified with proteins.
The Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a lot of depth and complexity compared to the Echézeaux, with a mixture of red and black fruits, cedar wood and tobacco. Initially gloomy, but opens nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy fleshy red fruit at the start, infused with orange peel, brown spices and a hint of truffle. Good depth and power towards the finish and impressive in terms of a long finish.

The winery owns almost 13 hectares of vineyard divided over 12 AOCs, all located in the Côte de Nuits. The vines are very old, some more than 90 years. In 1988, Sophie and Alain Meunier-Confuron took over this beautiful family estate. It is undoubtedly one of the best domains in Burgundy. It is Alain Meunier who makes it his life's goal to keep his Burgundy wines at a high level. He sees the vineyards and the grapes as a living thing, something that requires constant attention. Almost unbelievable but it is true that this man performs the work manually as much as possible. As a result, one does not see tractors among his vineyards, but winegrowers on horseback. This is a costly and intensive way of working, but he is convinced that it does have a beneficial effect in the glass. Alain Meunier is a very modest and timid man, but very sympathetic and devoted to his vineyards with all his heart. His wife Sophie, in contrast to her husband, is a lot of liveliness and spontaneity. She takes care of the commercial side and the administration.
In the cellars he combines old methods with the most modern techniques. Some age-old methods have proven their worth, modern techniques allow everything to be refined and better controlled, says the oenologist at Jean-Jacques Confuron. Confuron's wines undergo a traditional red wine-making process. The wines mature in oak casks; for the Grand Cru 80-100% new, for the other wines between 30-50% new. The wines are clarified with proteins, they are not filtered.
