Description
In the Burgundian dialect, Charmes means old common land, cultivated and fallow, or fallow fields covered with hornbeam forests. The iron ore in the soil was once transported to Langres for the manufacture of knives. This climate is said to be home to the oldest vines in the commune, planted in 1881. Charmes-Chambertin grows on limestone rocks covered with thin, red-coloured soil, with marl, iron and stones, some of which are quite large. The rocky subsoil is very resistant but cracked, allowing the roots of the vines to dig deep, hence their surprising longevity. Some plots can live for 100 years.
The Charmes Chambertin has a floral bouquet right out of the gate. Think pomegranate and cranberry scents, good definition and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well-judged acidity and fine precision towards the finish that needs just a little more persistence.
