Description
The Monte Olmi is made with Corvina (30%), Corvinone (30%), Rondinella (30%), Molinara, Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara, Dindarella, Croatina and Forselina (10%) and has been raised for 24-36 months in barrels of Slovenian oak. The vineyard, large 2.5ha, is 20 years old and bears the name Monte Olmi. It is located at Pedemonte di Valpolicella, in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico area. The Riserva is only made in the best years such as 2016.
The grapes are picked by hand at the end of September/beginning of October. The grapes are then dried under a controlled temperature and humidity for a period of about 4 months. As a result, the grapes lose about 30 to 40% of their weight. Then the grapes are gently pressed and the fermentation process is started. This fermentation takes place at a low temperature of about 15ºC and lasts about 2 months. The aging of the wine is continued in Slovenian oak barriques for a period of 2-3 years. After the wine has been bottled, the bottles are left for another 6 months in the cellars of the domain for further maturation before being sold.
The Tedeschi Capitel Monte Olmi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva has a beautiful intense ruby red wine with hints of cherries, raspberries, currants and Slovenian oak. The taste is full and robust, with a good structure and confirms the smells. The finish is long. This wine has had three red glasses in the Gambero Rosso for years, the highest rating!
The Tedeschi family is also seen as one of the godfathers of the Amarone. The family has been producing wines since 1630. Renzo Tedeschi is a distinguished winemaker and belongs to the top internationally. Despite all this, it is still a real family business because the children Antoinette, Sabrina and Riccardo have also joined the company.

One of the top wines in the Tedeschi portfolio, the 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Capitel Monte Olmi brings the intensity threshold up significantly in terms of fruit weight, power and alcohol (measured at 17% here). Dark fruit and plum are folded into candied fruit and cherry liqueur. The tannins are present, for sure, but expertly integrated to show no bitterness or astringency. In fact, the mouthfeel is probably the best and most unique feature of this wine. This is a 12,000-bottle release.
The Tedeschi family has added an exciting top-end wine to its portfolio. The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Maternigo is the third cru expression put forth by this leading estate. Tedeschi farms 48 hectares in the Classico zone (the La Fabriseria and Monte Olmo vineyards) and another site in the eastern zone (Maternigo). All of the terrain is alluvial of morainic origin located between 180 and 500 meters above sea level.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Capitel Monte Olmi Riserva 2016 | $90
This rich red nods at Amarone's traditional style with its dark focus and notes of stemmy herbs, iron and fresh earth, but the juicy core of black plum and cherry reduction flavors, the supple, chalky tannins and the overall integration and balance show the precision and pleasure of a modern approach. Long, lovely finish. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. Drink now through 2036. 700 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Tedeschi is one of the undisputed highlights of the Valpolicella. Not only the wines from dried grapes, but also the 'normal' Valpolicellas may count as specialties of the family business Tedeschi. Father Renzo has now handed things over to his son Riccardo, who is now putting the finishing touches. This newly new generation gives the company some extra impulses, for example with a surprising new Valpolicella. Partly due to the maturation of eight or ten months in French oak, Riccardo creates an unrecognizable powerful Valpolicella, something completely different from the light wine we are used to. This wine comes from Fabriseria's own vineyard, from which a fantastic Amarone is harvested in peak years.
Tedeschi makes a wide range of wines, not only red, but also white from grapes from neighboring regions such as Soave and Bianco die Custoza. Some of the grapes are purchased from other producers. In that case, Tedeschi exercises intensive supervision during the growing season on the state of affairs in the vineyard. The best wines come from our own vineyards from the heart of the region, the Valpolicella Classico. With a few other producers, Tedeschi is committed to stricter rules for Valpolicella, Amarone and Recioto. It is rightly believed here that wines based on too high yields, originating from the fertile Po area, are actually unworthy of the DOC Valpolicella. And these wines certainly do not match the perfectionism of special Valpolicella producers such as Fratelli Tedeschi.
