Description
Love and respect for nature and its vineyards characterize owner Francesco Illy. As a member of the famous Illy family, known for its high quality coffee and espresso, it is only natural for Francesco to strive for excellence. You can taste this in the beautiful biodynamic wines that he produces on his 54 hectare estate in Tuscany.
That this approach has not gone unnoticed is evident from the high scores achieved.
The unique wines of Podere Le Ripi have been achieved by, against the expectations of experts, have proved particularly successful. By planting the vines much closer together than usual, the roots are forced to go deep into the ground, thereby absorbing the different minerals from the various geological layers. Together with the great value that Podere Le Ripi attaches to a natural soil with flowers and other organisms without the addition of chemicals, a special terroir is created with recognizable aromas and structure. Podere Le Ripi's wines rest in oak barrels for 36 months or more. Then they are matured for 1 to 3 years in the bottle in the cellar before they are sold. The wines are characterized by special finesse, fruit, harmony and sufficient strength. The 2012 was allowed to mature for no less than 54 months.
Francesco Illy makes the wines together with Sebastian Nasello, an enologist who has been working at Podere Le Ripi since 2012. In February 2016 Sebastian Nasello won the Giulio Gambelli 2016 prize.
What is very striking about the Podere le Ripi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Amore e Magia is the beauty and richness of the color. The wine has a beautiful dark ruby red intensity and purple accents of fuchsia. The grapes come from an area of only four hectares at 200 to 250 meters above sea level near Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the east side of Montalcino, not far from the Lupi e Sirene vineyard - no other of Podere's famous wines le Ripi. In the nose, the wine has an exuberant bouquet of red and dark fruit. This wine is very open and expressive with candied cherry and raspberry, which turn into spices and roasted nuts. About 15,000 bottles were made. The wine was bottled in July 2019 and went on sale in January 2020.

This wine was actually a Rosso di Montalcino last year but has happily become a full-fledged Brunello in this vintage. I'm told that this change is permanent. What I notice most about the Podere le Ripi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Amore e Magia is the beauty and the richness of its color. The wine pours fourth with dark ruby intensity and purple accents of fuchsia. Fruit comes from a four-hectare site located at 200 to 250 meters above sea level near Castelnuovo dell'Abate on the eastern side of Montalcino, not far from the Lupi e Sirene vineyard that becomes another single-vineyard expression from Podere le Ripi. Following the brightness of the wine's appearance, you get a very incisive and direct bouquet with a sharp and vertical delivery that is pushed by a touch of volatility. This wine is very open and expressive, and it lays it all out for you to enjoy. Candied cherry and raspberry segue to Christmas spice and toasted nut. Some 15,000 bottles were made. It was bottled in July 2019 and went to market in January 2020.
Podere le Ripi has made quite a few changes these past few years. It purchased a new property on the west side of the appellation, thus doubling in size from 12 to 25 hectares. More importantly, it now has access to fruit from two polar opposites sides of the Brunello territory, thus awarding more blending and single-vineyard possibilities. Podere le Ripi did not make its Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene in 2014.

Dark, sparkling ruby garnet. Very expressive nose, full of ripe dark cherries, fresh plums, blackberries, a little leather and cloves. Much firm pressure on the palate, ripe fruit, very clear, unfolds with dense tannins in many strands, very long finish.

Podere le Ripi is a biodynamic winery in Montalcino with 133 hectares of forest, vineyards, and olive trees inhabited by a shepherd and his sheep until 1998. Uncontaminated soil with great plant diversity, surrounded by breathtaking views and clean air.
Currently, there are 75 hectares of biodynamic vineyards, rooted in woodland, olive groves, a vegetable garden, and fruit trees, all spread over two opposite Montalcino mountain slopes, with soils belonging to different geological eras. This is where Podere Le Ripi started the adventure in 1998, on the east side of Montalcino: Castelnuovo dell'Abate. In 2016 they expanded the vineyards on the west side, from the oasis-like environment of il Galampio.
