History of Luigi Einaudi winery and region

Poderi Luigi Einaudi was founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, later President of Italy, in Dogliani, Piedmont. Since then, the family has played a prominent role in the development of quality wines from the Langhe region. Today, the estate is led by fourth-generation winemaker Matteo Sardagna, with the support of winemaker Beppe Caviola and his teammates, who are modernizing the family project while maintaining tradition. The estate covers approximately 60 hectares, spread across Dogliani and Barolo crus such as Terlo and Cannubi, on clay-limestone and blue-gray marl soils at an altitude of 200 to 400 meters. The climate is typically continental with cool winter nights, ideal for Nebbiolo aging.

About the wine Barolo 2006 Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi

This single-vineyard Barolo comes from the Terlo cru in Barolo and bears the name Costa Grimaldi, a select portion of the vineyard located at approximately 310 meters altitude and facing southeast, with limestone Marne soil that contributes to elegance and finesse. The 2006 vintage reflects the classic Poderi Einaudi style, with long aging and ageing potential.

Grapes, harvest and vinification Barolo Terlo 2006

This wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, sourced entirely from the Costa Grimaldi vineyards. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected beforehand. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel or cement-lined tanks, followed by maceration for approximately 22 to 25 days, depending on the vintage. After fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is then aged for at least 30 months in large Slavonian or French oak barrels, followed by bottle aging. This process produces refined tannins, deep red fruit, and excellent aging potential.

Color, aroma and taste of the 2006 Barolo

In the glass, the 2006 Barolo reveals a deep ruby to garnet color with ruby reflections, a sign of ageing without fatigue. The bouquet opens with refined aromas of dried roses, violets, red cherries, and earthy notes, subtly mineral, and spicy accents of star anise and a blend of herbs. On the palate, the wine presents itself as medium to full-bodied, with power yet suppleness: fine-grained, silky tannins, a taut acidity, and a long, spicy finish. Flavor notes of sour cherry, cranberry, a subtle herbal complex, licorice, and tobacco complement each other, contributing to balance and length.
