History of Château Durfort-Vivens
Château Durfort-Vivens is a Grand Cru Classé from the famous 1855 classification. The estate's history dates back to the 17th century and takes its name from the Durfort de Duras family. Since the 20th century, the château has been owned by the Lurton family, one of the most influential families in Bordeaux. Under the leadership of Gonzague Lurton, Durfort-Vivens has experienced a significant increase in quality, with an emphasis on organic and biodynamic viticulture.
The terroir of Margaux and grape varieties
The vineyard covers approximately 55 hectares and is situated on the finest gravel soils of Margaux, which ensure excellent drainage and heat retention. The plantings consist primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Together, these grapes create the characteristic style of Durfort-Vivens: elegant, refined, and long-lasting.
The 2005 vintage: one of the greats
2005 is considered one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the 21st century. The growing season was perfectly balanced: a warm summer, ample rain at the right times, and ideal harvest conditions. For Durfort-Vivens, this resulted in a wine with impressive concentration, deep aromas, and exceptional aging potential. This makes the 2005 not only a favorite among wine enthusiasts but also a very attractive option for investors.
Vinification and maturation
The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully sorted. Vinification took place in stainless steel and concrete vats, with each plot individually selected to best bring out the nuances of the terroir. Maturation lasted 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which were new. This gives the wine its structure, complexity, and aging potential.

From: 2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)
The 2005 Durfort-Vivens is powerful, earthy and exotic, all at the same time. Rich red fruit, iron, dried herbs, mocha, anise, cedar and pipe tobacco all open in the glass. Durfort-Vivens is a decidedly rustic, burly Margaux in 2005, but it has enough depth and overall stuffing to drink well for another decade or more.
