Description
2007 La Scolca Soldati D'Antan Spumante Brut Millesimato
The 2007 La Scolca Soldati D'Antan Millesimato Brut is a magnificent representation of top-class Italian spumante. With a sparkling straw-yellow color and a brilliant mousse, this wine immediately reveals its grandeur. In the glass, a refined nose of dried flowers, ripe apricots, and a hint of tangerine peel unfolds, creating an aromatic palette that is both classic and inviting. Delicate nuances of bread crust and broken biscuits add an extra dimension, a subtle nod to the traditional méthode champenoise used here.
the La Scolca winery
For over a century, La Scolca has been a benchmark in Piedmont, renowned for its masterful interpretation of both still and sparkling wines. The Bera family, now in its fourth generation, combines experience with innovation, striving to create wines that truly reflect the essence of their terroir. The estate is internationally renowned for its ability to combine traditional methods with modern finesse, resulting in wines that are both accessible and impressive in structure and complexity.
test atmosphere of the 2007
The Soldati D'Antan 2007 is a wine that immediately impresses with its texture and refinement. James Suckling awarded this millesimato 93 points, describing it as "a decadent sparkling wine, with notes of dried flowers, dried apricots and tangerine peel, bread crust and broken biscuits. There is considerable evolution and complexity. Fine bubbles, a creamy texture, and a clear, balanced finish. Beautiful now, but also capable of aging beautifully." These observations perfectly capture the wine's character: a refined balance between vibrant freshness, subtle mousse, and an intriguing layering of aromas.
terroir and context
La Scolca's vineyards are situated on chalky, well-drained slopes in Piedmont, where the soil is rich in minerals and ideal for the delicate Cortese grapes that form the basis of Soldati D'Antan. The combination of altitude, microclimate, and traditional vineyard care ensures perfect ripening and exceptional concentration in the grapes. The expression of the terroir is subtly interwoven in this wine: the mineral freshness contributes to its length, while the aromatic complexity of the grapes is expressed in the floral and fruity notes that develop over the years.
vinification
The Soldati D'Antan 2007 was produced using the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle, resulting in an elegant mousse and a creamy texture. Fermentation took place at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic freshness, while the extended aging on the fine lees contributes to the wine's complexity and richness. This careful vinification combines the energy of young bubbles with the depth that time in the bottle brings, creating an elegant balance of freshness, texture, and aroma. Disgorgement only takes place after just over 12 years.
maturation and storage potential
Now nearly two decades old, this millesimato has undergone a remarkable evolution. The primary notes of citrus and white fruit have developed into subtle, layered aromas of dried fruit, almond, and baked bread. The mousse remains lively and fine, while the creamy texture emphasizes its complexity and elegance. As a natural product, each bottle can vary slightly, but overall, the 2007 Soldati D'Antan offers an optimal drinking experience now, with ample potential to enjoy further refinement for several years to come.
wine and food pairings
This historic spumante is perfect as an aperitif or to accompany light dishes. It pairs perfectly with seafood like oysters, scallops, and lobster, as well as delicate white meat dishes or subtle cheeses like burrata or taleggio. Its creamy texture and fine mousse also make it well-suited for dishes with light sauces or nuts, while its elegance and minerality create a beautiful balance with more complex flavors. Thanks to the versatility and refinement of this millesimato, it's also an excellent choice for festive occasions and dinners where finesse is paramount.
