Prieto Picudo is found almost exclusively in the region south of Leon in Spain. So hot and dry in the summer. Paradoxically, this is a grape that is not drought tolerant and is quite sensitive to the scorching sun. That's why it was traditionally kept pretty much on the ground, to avoid the hot dry wind of the continental climate here.

What does wine from the Prieto Picudo grape taste like?

Rosé wines made from Prieto Picudo have fruity aromas of strawberries and raspberries and even some citrus and peach. The red wines usually have a deep intense purple color, nice tannins and a fresh acidity with aromas of black fruit. On the palate, flavors of blackberries and liquorice. The better ones also lend themselves to some wood aging.
