Kongsgaard Wine gained early recognition for its Chardonnay. John Kongsgaard took a unique approach to Chardonnay production, emphasizing minimal intervention, fermentation in small French oak barrels and the use of indigenous yeasts. It's limited to what Alex, Evan and John can make with their own hands, it's mainly two Chardonnays: The Judge and the Napa Valley. They also make small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and minuscule amounts of Viognier, Sauvignon blanc and Albariño in a cave on the eastern edge of Napa Valley. The intensively worked, shy vineyards and our archaic, low-intervention winemaking produce powerful, graceful wines – vibrant expressions of the vineyard and the variety.
