High above the Apennines rises the Gran Sasso, together with the Maiella massif shaping the climate of the Abruzzo region. This area consists of a narrow strip of mountainous and hilly land between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Inland, a distinctly continental climate prevails with hot summers, cold winters, and large temperature fluctuations between day and night. Along the coast, the sea moderates these extremes.

Wines from Abruzzo: a wine region between mountains and sea

The Abruzzo region in central Italy is one of the country’s most promising wine areas. Nestled between the imposing Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, it produces wines with a unique character. The combination of elevation, climate contrasts and maritime influences creates ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes.

Climate and geography of Abruzzo

The landscape of Abruzzo is dominated by hills and mountains, with the Gran Sasso massif - the highest peak of the Apennines - as a striking feature. Along with the nearby Maiella massif, it plays a major role in defining the region’s microclimates. Inland, the climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters. On the coast, cooling sea breezes create more moderate conditions. This contrast makes Abruzzo well-suited for both red and white premium wines.

Famous DOC wines from Abruzzo

Abruzzo boasts three official DOCs (Denominazione di Origine Controllata):

1. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC
2. Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC
3. Controguerra DOC

The region also has nine IGT classifications (Indicazione Geografica Tipica), often named after local grapes or areas. Although less than 20% of production falls under DOC status, the trend is clear: less bulk wine, more bottled quality. More and more winemakers are investing in vineyard precision and focusing on indigenous grape varieties.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo: powerful red with finesse

The most famous wine from Abruzzo is undoubtedly Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, made from the Montepulciano grape (not to be confused with the Tuscan town of the same name).

These deep red wines are powerful yet elegant, offering aromas of ripe red fruit, herbs, and a signature smooth tannin structure. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is an excellent match with red meats, grilled dishes, and hearty pasta meals.

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo: crisp white wine with potential

The leading white grape of the region is Trebbiano. Wines under the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC are typically dry, fresh, and refined. In the hands of skilled producers, they can be surprisingly complex and elegant. Trebbiano pairs beautifully with seafood, shellfish, and lighter starters.

Controguerra DOC and IGT wines

The smaller Controguerra DOC is located in northern Abruzzo, in the province of Teramo. Both red and white wines are made here, often from Montepulciano, Ciliegiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Passerina, and Chardonnay.

The IGT wines from Abruzzo often represent modern interpretations of local grape varieties. They offer winemakers more freedom to experiment and are perfect for those looking to explore distinctive, characterful Italian wines beyond the mainstream.
