Description
Embodying the essence of the Hemel-en-Aarde region and its diverse terroir, Walker Bay Pinot Noir offers a distinct expression of young vines from lower-slope vineyard parcels. This Pinot Noir opens with perfumed layers of red fruit, enriched with warm, rich spices and subtle woody nuances. Earthy notes of mushroom and dried flowers add complexity to its aromatic profile. On the palate, it reveals a generous and polished texture, framed by fine, chalky tannins.
The majority of the grapes for this wine come from vineyards on mid-height, south-facing slopes, supplemented by parcels on the north-facing slopes, all in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Just 4 to 8 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, this appellation benefits from a cool, temperate climate. Southerly ocean winds sweep through the valley during the summer, creating frequent sea fog and cloudy conditions that moderate temperatures and preserve acidity in the grapes.
All the grape plots are fermented separately with indigenous yeasts, with only pigeage (dipping of the grape cake) used for extraction, which ensures a delicate but thorough extraction. After fermentation, the wine remains on the skins for approximately 20-25 days for optimum structure. After pressing, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for 11 months in Burgundy barriques.

NEWTON JOHNSON PINOT NOIR WALKER BAY 2016
Score

This shows cooked strawberries, fruit cake, earth, baking spices, Christmas pudding, cedar and leather. Round and quite plush on the palate, but there's a streak of fresh acidity that holds this together. An intriguing, full-bodied pinot that's very much worth trying. Drink now.
