Description
Tight, juicy, and utterly Burgundy, this 2022 Les Grand Coutures is a delightful surprise.
Burgundy Chardonnay from Domaine Xavier Monnot
Domaine Xavier Monnot is located in Meursault, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. The estate is known for wines that fall perfectly between classic and modern. No wood bombs, no overly strong acidity, just balance. And that's certainly true of this Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Grand Coutures 2022.
The grapes come from various vineyards around Meursault, where the soil is rich in clay and limestone. This gives the wine its fresh tension and subtle depth. It's no wonder Monnot calls this cuvée his "calling card." Everything is perfect: the fruit, the oak, the structure.
2022 wine year in Burgundy
2022 was a warm and relatively dry year in Burgundy. But unlike 2021, there were no major hail or frost problems. This resulted in healthy grapes with excellent ripeness. Yet, the acidity was remarkably well-preserved. That's good news for white Burgundy.
You can immediately see this in Les Grand Coutures. Ripe notes of peach and yellow apple, but with that characteristic fresh undertone. The balance between roundness and austereness is remarkably well-achieved. You taste sunshine without it becoming heavy.
taste profile of les grand coutures
Open a bottle and you'll immediately experience that characteristic Burgundy aroma: a hint of brioche, a touch of citrus, and ripe white fruit. On the palate, the wine is supple yet with a fine tension. Not too rich, not too thin. Think lemon, apple, a touch of vanilla, and a slight salty edge.
The oak is subtle. No overpowering notes of toast or caramel, but just enough to add some extra depth. And the best part is: this wine is already delicious, but it can also last for a few more years. It will certainly retain its freshness until 2027.
food recommendation for burgundy chardonnay
Les Grand Coutures pairs perfectly with dishes that combine freshness and creaminess. Think pasta with salmon and lemon cream sauce, grilled chicken with tarragon, or scallops with beurre blanc. This wine also pairs well with soft cheeses like brie or Camembert.
Its balance and relatively low oak aging also make it a great pairing with sushi or sashimi. Its fruity and salty notes are particularly evident with salmon or tuna. And honestly, a glass on its own, on a sunny evening, is no joke either.
domaine xavier monnot and its style
Xavier Monnot took over the estate from his family in 2005, but he has been working in winemaking for much longer. He uses organic principles, though he is not certified. Everything revolves around healthy grapes and minimal intervention in the cellar.
His style is modern Burgundian: pure fruit, precise vinification, and restrained oak use. This is evident not only in his Meursaults and Volnays, but certainly also in this basic Burgundy. Les Grand Coutures is therefore more than just an entry-level wine. It's a Chardonnay with character.
