This excellent Pinot Gris matured in small oak barriques from Dutch soil is made by the Apostelhoeve vineyard from Maastricht, Limburg. A really nice Dutch winner!
The Hulst family has lived and operated the farm for many years. Originally it was a fruit growing company, but in 1970 Hugo Hulst brought the vine to the Apostelhoeve. Hugo started with 25 ares as an experiment. Thanks to the support of colleagues from France, Germany and Luxembourg and various wine-growing universities, the wines became a success. During an international wine panel test, the wines from the domain received international recognition: the three submitted wines were awarded gold by an international jury.
Wijngaard Apostelhoeve is now one of the best-known vineyards in the Netherlands, located south of the city of Maastricht on the Louwberg, in line with the Cannerberg on the west side of the Jekerdal. Currently, this beautiful winery has an area of 6 hectares used for viticulture. The grapes grow on a soil of gravel and marl with a layer of loess on top.
The soil of the Apostelhoeve vineyards contains various layers of marl (lime) and silex (pebble) under the warm humus-rich loess, typical ingredients for the taste of the Apostelhoeve wines. Most of Apostelhoeve's wines undergo stainless steel aging, but for their top wines they have now placed eight wooden oak barriques on the domain. This wine is bottled in strictly limited quantities as the 'Pinot Gris Barrique', a gastronomic delicacy. The wine has a very delicate taste but is full and firm in the mouth with beautiful fruit structures and refreshing acidity.

Wijngaard Apostelhoeve is one of the most famous and beautiful vineyards in the Netherlands. The winery is located south of the city of Maastricht on the Louwberg, an extension of the Cannerberg on the west side of the Jeker valley.
Wine grapes were grown in the Jeker valley as early as the Middle Ages. Around 1600 the 'Little Ice Age' ended this. Hugo Hulst, fruit grower, decided to build another vineyard at De Apostelhoeve in 1970. As a result, Apostelhoeve has now become the oldest functioning wine company in the Netherlands. Currently, this beautiful winery has an area of 6 hectares that is used for viticulture.
The soil consisting of pebble and marl with a layer of loess on top lends itself perfectly to the grape varieties: pinot gris, riesling, auxerrois and rivaner. Only white wines are made from these grape varieties, which are related in style and production to wines from Alsace and which also have a wonderful fresh, mineral taste.
Wijnhuis Apostelhoeve always works very carefully with all its processes. Take, for example, the harvest of the grapes. This is seen by this wine house as one of the most crucial steps in the winemaking process. The time of harvest is mainly determined by the ripeness of the grape, as measured by sugar, acid and tannin levels with winemakers making their decision to choose according to the wine style they want to produce. The weather can also be the roster of harvesting with the threat of heat, rain, hail and frost that can damage the grapes and cause various vine diseases.
