2012 Poggio Verrano Dromos Maremma
Magliano, Tuscany, in the rolling hills south of Grosseto, Francesco Bolla set out with Poggio Verrano to realize his dream: to make intense and elegant red wines, typical of the region, averse to all trends. Dròmos literally means route and Francesco and Valentina have found the right way for years, as evidenced by the year-in-year-out high ratings.
The Dròmos is a Super Tuscan and takes its name from the Grand Entrance in the ancient buildings of the Etruscans, the ancient inhabitants of Maremma. The wine and the name are typical of Francesco Bolla's "entrance" into the Maremma winery.
The Dromos is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Alicante, 10% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc and is therefore a Supertuscan like many wines from this region (because it does not meet the Sangiovese requirements and style of education according to the old Appelatie rules) as also applies, for example, to a Tignanello or Sassicaia).
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 170-300 m above sea level on a rocky bottom of calcareous clay. The vineyards have a view of the sea and this ideal situation ensures that with minimal intervention the vineyards remain healthy (the salty wind keeps the leaves dry and does not give pests such as aphids) and provides the necessary cooling in the evening which ensures very balanced fruit with sufficient acidity. The grapes are harvested by hand with selection in the vineyard and then again very carefully in the winery. The fruit unsuitable for the Dromos is sold and does not appear in any of the wines. Fermentation and maceration takes place in temperature controlled small open top stainless steel vats followed by maturation in French oak barriques for approximately 20 months and then a minimum of 24 months in bottle aging.
In the glass, Dromos has a deep ruby red color with pronounced aromas of ripe blackcurrant, fruit, licorice, vanilla, tobacco, minerals and balsamic notes. In the mouth the wine is dry with a nice acidity which keeps the wine very lively. The wine has beautiful melted tannins and is very complex with dark fruit again, but also leather and tobacco in the aftertaste. Lively, powerful, full bodied with soft tannins and a long and smooth finish. This can compete with many Super Tuscans but clearly more wine for the money.
The Dromos has been selected in the VINUM magazine 2021 in the special edition about "Top of Toskana" and is in the row with Tignanello and Macchiole Paleo (you will find the article in the tab appendix)
