Description
2000 Clos Fourtet Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé
The 2000 Clos Fourtet is an impressive Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion. This wine demonstrates how a major Bordeaux estate can create a classic vintage that still captivates. Clos Fourtet is known for its deep structure and elegant aging, and this vintage is a prime example. Wine from 2000 is now over twenty years old, and while most great Bordeaux wines retain a familiar character at this age, it's always exciting to see how natural products develop. Each bottle can react subtly differently to time and storage, making tasting a new experience.
the Clos Fourtet winery
Located in the heart of Saint-Émilion, Clos Fourtet boasts a rich history dating back to the 16th century. The estate covers approximately 18 hectares, primarily planted with Merlot and a small portion of Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are situated on chalky, clay-rich soils, ideal for producing wines with depth and complexity. Clos Fourtet is a Premier Grand Cru Classé, indicating its consistently high quality and ranks among the finest wines from Saint-Émilion.
The winery combines modern techniques with respect for nature. They operate organically and sustainably, enhancing the expression of the soil and climate. This makes each bottle a reflection of both the terroir and the vintage. The 2000 is a prime example of how an exceptional vintage can mature and slowly develop in the bottle, without anyone being able to accurately predict how it will taste in a few years.
tasting of 2000 Clos Fourtet
Upon pouring, the deep ruby red color immediately stands out, softening slightly towards the rim. The nose opens with notes of ripe cassis, plums, and a hint of tobacco. With a little aeration, subtle aromas of leather and truffle emerge. The palate is rich and powerful, with soft tannins that blend elegantly with the fruity notes. With age, the wine has acquired a roundness not often found in younger Bordeaux, but it remains exciting to see how it will develop further. Each sip reveals subtle shifts in aroma and flavor, something that continues to captivate wine lovers.
combine with dishes
The 2000 Clos Fourtet pairs well with rich dishes that complement the wine's structure. Think slow-cooked beef, rack of lamb, or game dishes with a robust sauce. Characterful cheeses, such as aged hard cheeses or blue molds, also pair beautifully. Because the wine possesses both power and finesse, it remains surprisingly versatile with a suitable menu.
wine as a natural product
The special thing about a bottle like this is that it's a natural product. Grapes are influenced by the weather, the soil, and nature's natural rhythms. This means that even within a single vintage, each bottle can be slightly different. A wine of this age is therefore extra exciting: how it will continue to develop is never entirely predictable. The pleasure of tasting lies precisely in that uncertainty and the unique character that develops after more than twenty years of aging.
maturation and storage
This 2000 Saint-Émilion has had time to develop and can continue to improve for years to come with proper storage. At Grand Cru wines, the wine is stored in a climate-controlled wine warehouse, where the temperature and humidity are optimal for extended aging. This ensures that each bottle remains in peak condition and is ready to be enjoyed at the right time. For those who wish to drink the wine immediately, it is recommended to decant slowly to allow the aromas to fully develop.

Attractive aromas of wild berries, pencil shavings, vine smoke, black truffle and violets introduce the 2019 Clos Fourtet, a medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless wine with a concentrated core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, saline finish. Elegant and complete, this is a brilliant wine from this 19-hectare vineyard situated on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, just outside the village, which has been on a qualitative roll since the 2001 vintage.
Like its neighbor, Canon, Clos Fourtet sits on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, with shallow soils directly above the bedrock; but whereas Canon is exposed south/southwest, Clos Fourtet's exposition is more northerly exposed and thus a touch less precocious. Since the Cuvelier family's purchase in 2001, the vineyards have been extensively replanted at higher density, and a massal selection has been taken and propagated, being rolled out wholesale beginning in 2018. Now the vineyards are maturing, and so is the winemaking style: there's less and less malolactic fermentation in barrel, winemaking is gentle and rather classical in inspiration, and new oak is chosen for discretion rather than impact. This is a superb site that naturally produces rather refined, precise but intense wines, developing considerable complexity with age, and the 2019 surely ranks among the finest vintages at this address in the modern era.

Lots of purple fruit with white pepper and crushed stones in the nose. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and poised with a very chalky and salty undertone to the purple fruit. Flavorful finish. Linear and long. Try after 2026.

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Clos Fourtet is positively stellar, just as it was from barrel. It presents a beguiling mix of dense, plush fruit packed into a classically structure frame. The first impression is one of opulence, until the minerality of Saint-Émilion's famed plateau begins to emerge. Black cherry, plum, leather, exotic spice, licorice and blood orange build into the statuesque, explosive finish. The 2019 is a magnificent effort from the Cuvelier family and long time consulting winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Clos Fourtet has a beautifully defined bouquet of vivacious red berry fruit, wild hedgerow, cassis and crushed violets, intense at the moment, and yet I think this is going to close down. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, blackberry, a touch of tar, and a pinch of white pepper on a finish that fans out gloriously. A long-term prospect.

From: 2019 Bordeaux: A Long, Strange Trip (Jun, 2020)
The 2019 Clos Fourtet is exotic and beguiling in the glass. Inky dark fruit, licorice, espresso, menthol and lavender all run through this sumptuous, beautifully resonant Saint-Émilion with bright mineral underpinnings that extend the finish effortlessly. A regal, exquisite wine, the 2019 has so much to offer. I can't wait to taste it in bottle.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Clos Fourtet continues its strong run of form under the direction of Mathieu Cuvelier and his team. It sprints out of the blocks with intense blackberries, raspberry coulis, blood orange and crushed violet aromas, touches of iodine developing as it musters ever increasing delineation. The palate is medium-bodied but (as expected) contains more weight and girth compared to its peers. Firm grip, solid and yet graceful, there is a crescendo of flavours towards its heady, focused and very persistent finish. Wonderful salinity in the mouth, the aftertaste is one of the longest you will find on the Right Bank. Fabulous.

Clos Fourtet owes its reputation to the Rulleau and Carles families, lords of Figeac, who acquired these vineyards in the 18th century with a special natural drainage. In 2001, Fourtet came into the possession of the Cuvelier family, who kept Fourtet's status as 1st Grand Cru Classé with great passion and investment. This noble 1st Grand Cru Classé is located right in front of the great church of Saint-Emilion, almost in the historic heart of the ancient town. The cellars of the walled vineyards (the Clos) consist of no less than three floors of corridors carved in the caves. Almost as impressive as the wine.
