The Kremstal wine region is located on both sides of the Danube, around the city of Krems and falls under Lower Austria, the most important wine region in Austria. Kremstal is a fairly old region with many beautiful picturesque villages with vineyards near the Krems and Danube rivers. Kremstal is often compared to its neighboring region, Kamptal, due to the similarities in grape varieties and wine styles.

Most vines are planted on terraced vineyards. The beautiful villages and farmlands take you back in time. Here you will find great, often small winegrowers who produce fantastic wines. The soil consists largely of loess and primeval rock (=gneiss, granite and slate). The ancient rock produces wonderfully refined mineral, often complex, wines and those from loess soils are fruity, floral and soft.

What grapes are used in Kremstal?

The grape varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Grauburgunder and Roter Veltliner do particularly well in this region. Kremstal DAC is the name for quality wines from this region. The only wines that receive this designation are made from the Grüner veltliner and Riesling grapes.

What about the wines?

The wines from Kremstal are characterized by their freshness, purity and liveliness. Grüner Veltliner wines from the region often have aromas and flavors of green apple, white pepper and spice, while Riesling wines exhibit elegant floral and citrus flavors. Both dry and sweeter styles are produced, the latter often being noble sweet wines.
