De DOCG Vernaccia di San Gimignano was de allereerste DOC van Italië, ze werd in 1966 opgericht. In 1993 promoveerde deze herkomstbenaming tot de DOCG-status die ze nu nog steeds bezit.Minimaal 85% van de druiven die voor de wijn gebruikt worden, moet vernaccia zijn
