Try to deviate from the usual paths and try a fine wine from Puglia or a nice white wine from Friuli. You will see that the diversity of Italian wines is unprecedented and of all wine-producing countries, Italy offers the greatest diversity of flavors and types of wine.
Rino Russolo maakt wijnen ten noordoosten van Venetië in de vlakte van Friuli, die Grave wordt genoemd. Rino is de vierde generatie wijnmaker van de familie, die eind 19de eeuw wijn begon met wijnmaken in de Pordenone regio. Tegenwoordig bevindt de cantina zich in San Quirino, midden tussen de cru wijngaarden van Ronco Calaj. De wijngaarden worden aan de noordkant beschut door de uitlopers van de Alpen, terwijl aan de zuidkant de Adriatische zee zorg draagt voor voldoende vocht en een frisse zeebries, vooral in de middag. In deze regio spelen veel wijnmakers op ‘zeker’: ze plukken voor de weersomslag. Bij Russolo worden gelukkig alleen echt rijpe druiven geplukt, zodat de bitters in de wijn binnen de perken blijven en de aromatische expressie veel groter is. De wijnen zijn zeer gewild (tegenwoordig ook in Italië zelf, ondersteund door hoge waarderingen in de Gambero Rosso), zodat maar een beperkte hoeveelheid naar Nederland komt.
