2019 Zagreus Vinica
Mavrud is the native grape of Bulgaria. The name derives from the Greek word for "black". Mavrud is considered to be one of the best and most distinguished Bulgarian grape varieties, but is only planted in 1.5% of the vineyard-regions. It is a very old variety and delivers deep rubin-red wines, full of tannines and refreshing acidity. In its aromas you find blackcurrants and mulberry, with further aging hints of cacao and chocolate. To get the best out of the grape, aging in oak barrels is almost inevitable. The grape originally comes from the Bulgarian province of Tracië.
White wines are also made from the Mavrud grape. The blue grapes are pressed straight away without the skins to prevent colouring. The final white wine is also well worth it. Delicate structure with a pleasant fresh character with notes of pineapple, pear and apples.
Several clones of the Mavrud grape are known, but not much research has been done yet on the differences and the origin. It is clear, however, that one matures much faster than the other and that there are large differences in skin thickness.
There are many stories about the history of the grape, but the name Mavrud is said to come from a beautiful Bulgarian legend:
King Khan Krum had all Bulgarian vineyards destroyed in the ninth century—the legend does not say why. A lion escaped from its cage and threatened the city—the legend doesn't say which one. A brave young man—his name, of course, was "Mavrud"—slew the lion. The astonished king inquired where this Mavrud got his courage. Mavrud's mother told the king that it was because of drinking wine, which the family had secretly withheld. The king then had all the vineyards planted again.
